PRINCETON, N.J. – The final event in a competitive fall schedule for the men's tennis team, the Mountain Hawks saw Harry Wang, Zack Elliot, Jack Martin-Dyer, Jacob Edelchik and Gary Fishkin selected to compete in the ITA Northeast Regionals at Princeton University this past weekend.
Wang was the only member of the Brown and White to advance past the first round, as he defeated Martinovic from Quinnipiac in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. He would, however, fall in the second round to Vasa of Cornell in a competitive three-set bout. Winning the first set 7-5, Wang would not be able to hold on as he lost the next two sets 6-0 and 7-5.
Elliot went up against Holm from Buffalo and was tested in a three-set match. Losing the first set 6-3, Elliot would win set two cleanly at 6-0 before losing set three 7-5.
In doubles play, the pairing of Elliot and Fishkin went up against Graziani and Zhu of Penn where Lehigh would fall 8-2.
Martin-Dyer and Edelchick would fall in doubles as well, losing 8-5 to the pairing of Haung and Lui from Columbia.
"It was a great job by Zack Elliot making it out of the qualifiers as a freshman and beating strong competitors from Bryant and St John's on the same day. He came very close to beating a top player from Buffalo as well," said head coach Wouter Hendrix.
"After maintaining a steady course in his first round of the main draw and beating a higher ranked player from Quinnipiac, Harry Wang brought some of his best tennis against a starter from Cornell only to fall short of victory by a mere two games. The match could have gone either way and it was a delight to be a part of it. When a student-athlete competes the way Harry did in that match, it makes you very proud as a coach."
With the conclusion of the fall portion of their schedule, Lehigh will focus its attention on preparing for the regular season. The Mountain Hawks kick off the season with a visit from Villanova on Sunday, February 3 as the Wildcats come to the Lewis Tennis Center.
"Our fall season has come to an end and has given us plenty of optimism for the future. It is now up to us to plan our offseason in a way that will sharpen our bodies and minds for day one of the spring season. We need to be ready to hit the ground running as soon as first practice hits," said Hendrix.
