KINGSTON, Jamaica - Lehigh men's lacrosse associate head coach Errol Wilson has been named the head coach for Team Jamaica, which is preparing to compete in its first-ever Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in 2018. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Calbert Hutchison, President of the Jamaica Lacrosse Association.
Wilson will continue a recent trend of Lehigh coaches who coach a national team in international competition as Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese served as a United States coach for many years, including the most recent 2014 World Championships, while former Lehigh assistant (and current Saint Joseph's head coach) Taylor Wray has coached for Team Canada.
"I would like to thank all my coaches along the way in every sport I ever played," said Wilson. "I've been fortunate to be around some incredible coaches, teachers, support staff and administrators. I'm extremely grateful to all the head coaches I have worked for - Lars Tiffany, Jim Stagnitta and now Kevin Cassese. All of these men have been instrumental in my career, and life."
A former goaltender, Wilson played college lacrosse at Stony Brook and started his coaching career at Brown University where he helped lead the Bears to a 2008 Ivy League Championship. After one season at Rutgers, Wilson recently completed his sixth season at Lehigh, the last three as associate head coach. Wilson has served as offensive coordinator since 2016 after serving as defensive coordinator in 2015. Wilson helped lead the Mountain Hawks to the 2013 Patriot League Championship and back to the title game in 2014, also helping lead Lehigh to its seventh straight league tournament appearance this past season.
The appointment as Team Jamaica head coach is special to Wilson as his mother migrated to the United States in 1983.
"My mother is my daily inspiration," said Errol. "She was brave and determined. When she migrated to the USA in 1983, her sacrifice, commitment and dedication to myself, my sister Tyisha and our entire family has been a blessing for us all. My mother's, competitive and ambitious nature reflect our Jamaican roots; she has instilled that in me. Lastly, I would like to thank my wife, Pat and our two boys Roman (5) and Solomon (1). I could not make this commitment without their love and support. I'm honored to represent my family and my roots and my heritage as the head coach of Team Jamaica."
The Mountain Hawks wrapped up the 2017 season at 7-7 overall, advancing to their seventh straight Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh and Army West Point are the only two programs to compete in each of the last seven tournaments. Among Lehigh's highlight moments was two top-20 wins, over Boston University (in the regular season) and Princeton.
