PHILADELPHIA - In rainy conditions on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the Lehigh men's rowing team put forth a pair of strong efforts at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday. The Mountain Hawks' Junior Varsity Eight finished second in its petite final while the Varsity Eight came in fifth, just seconds behind the top crews. In the end, the JV Eight and Varsity Eight finished eighth and 11th overall, respectively, both marks higher than their seeds. Lehigh's Junior Varsity Four and Freshmen Eight were also scheduled to race in the afternoon, but the Dad Vail Regatta was forced to cancel all races after 10:35 a.m. due to the weather conditions.

"What was striking to me was how both crews race in those petite finals," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The Varsity Eight came down with a lot of aggression and a lot of maturity in regards to how they raced, and that will paid dividends in the long run, especially considering how young of a boat they are. The Junior Varsity Eight had the race of their lives and the race we knew they were capable of doing all season. It's great that they had it as their last race, and as (senior) Zach Maguire's last hurrah."

The day began with the Varsity Eight posting a time of 5:55.887, good for fifth, less than a half second out of fourth place and less than 10 seconds behind first-place Michigan. The Junior Varsity Eight went on to finish second in its petite final with a time of 6:05.732, ahead of Grand Valley (6:10.479), Purdue (6:10.829), Marietta (6:27.818) and DePaul (6:40.172).

"It was disappointing that the JV Four and the Freshmen Eight couldn't get in their races, because I think they would have also stepped up and had some great racing," said Conley. "But where the program's going is really exciting, and that's permeating from the athletes themselves because of how well the program did this weekend, men and women."

Finishing ahead of their seed is important for the Mountain Hawks, as they look to continue improving day-by-day and year-by-year.

"With such a young group, having what people might say is a small victory (finishing ahead of your ranking) becomes a huge victory," said Conley. "That means the athletes believe in the program and the process in which we're trying to achieve becoming a championship team. They're only going to get faster by continuing to believe in that process."
