
Mountain Hawks head to Holy Cross for fourth Patriot League series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will look to extend its lead atop the Patriot League standings with a three-game series against Holy Cross this weekend. The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday at Freshman Field, with start times on both days set for noon. Lehigh is 19-16 overall and 8-1 in the Patriot League this year.
The Mountain Hawks have won six of their last seven games, splitting a doubleheader against Fordham on Wednesday. In the first game, which Lehigh won 4-1, the team took a quick 1-0 lead when junior Nicole Yozzo scored when senior Vicky Lattanzio reached on an error. Leading 2-0 going into the fourth inning, the Mountain Hawks scored another pair of runs when senior Ashley Cole hit a two-RBI double. Senior Christine Campbell struck out five in a complete game effort to move to 11-4 on the year.
In the second game, Lehigh recorded just two hits while the Rams totaled 11. Fordham took control early, scoring on a pair of RBI singles in the first inning. Lehigh scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 3-1, but Fordham fired back with three runs in the top of the seventh to eventually win 6-1, snapping Lehigh's six game winning stream while handing the Mountain Hawks their first home loss.
Yozzo leads the Mountain Hawks in both batting average (.355), on-base percentage (.394) and stolen bases (13). Freshman Reva Alderman holds the team lead in RBIs with 22 while Cole leads in runs scored at 20. Pitching-wise, Campbell (1.92) and sophomore Emily Sorem (2.38) are both top 10 in the Patriot League in ERA.
Holy Cross is 7-20 this year with a 2-4 record in the league. The Crusaders split a doubleheader with Marist in their home opener on Wednesday and then won a 4-3 decision at Brown on Thursday. In the league, Holy Cross was swept at Boston University last weekend, but won two of three against Army West Point the week prior. The team is led by Mandy McCarthy, who has a .346 batting average and 14 RBIs. Taylor Moss leads the team in RBIs with 19. The Crusaders have a 6.17 team ERA with Alexandra Held and Katy Watson tied for the team lead at 5.40. Held leads Holy Cross in wins (five), innings pitched (83) and strikeouts (41).
All-time, Lehigh has an 81-19 record against Holy Cross, winning two of three games last year, including a 1-0, 10-inning win in which Campbell tossed a one-hitter and retired the final 25 batters she faced.
Lehigh enters its fourth weekend of league play with a one game lead over Army West Point in the league standings. Bucknell is in third place at 6-3 in the league, while Boston University is 3-3.
Following this series, Lehigh will play Princeton in a road doubleheader Wednesday. The first game will start at 3 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.
