WORCESTER, Mass. – Following a sluggish start to its doubleheader at Holy Cross Saturday the Lehigh softball team used a three-run seventh inning to rally for a game one win, then put up 10 runs in the nightcap to complete the sweep at Freshman Field. Junior Carolyn Wright's two-run double put Lehigh in front as the Mountain Hawks took game one 4-2. Classmate Rachel Timberman drove in five runs in the nightcap as the Mountain Hawks claimed game two 10-1 in six innings.
Wright went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs, while Timberman went 4-for-6 with six runs batted in. With the sweep, Lehigh moves to 21-16 overall and 10-1 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks lead Bucknell and Boston University by two games in the loss column with the Bison and Terriers having three games in hand. Holy Cross falls to 7-22 overall and 2-6 in the Patriot League.
The host Crusaders led for most of game one, going in front on Sydney Burr's two-out RBI infield single in the second inning. Lehigh had base runners in every inning but left nine runners on base through the first five innings. Sophomore Brianna Gerhardt reached second base on an error with one out in the sixth and Timberman singled up the middle to bring her home with the tying run.
Holy Cross regained the lead on Emily Krisanda's single in the bottom of the sixth but Lehigh's offense came to life in the seventh. Senior Vicky Lattanzio got things started with a one-out single and sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago followed with a bunt single. Wright then launched a two-run double to center bringing the tying and go-ahead runs home to give Lehigh a 3-2 lead. Two batters later Gerhardt singled home Wright with an insurance run.
Senior Christine Campbell pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the come-from-behind victory. Campbell improved to 12-4 on the season, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Alexandra Held took the loss for Holy Cross. Lehigh finished with 10 hits in the opener, with Rabago, Wright, Timberman and senior Ashley Cole each contributing two.
Lehigh raced in front in the second inning of game two, loading the bases with one out before Timberman tripled down the right field line to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead. Three Katy Watson walks loaded the bases for Lehigh in the fourth and with two outs, Cole singled through the left side bringing home two runs to give Lehigh a 5-0 advantage.
The Crusaders put an unearned run on the board in the bottom of the fourth but Lehigh put the game away with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Lattanzio led off the fifth with a home run to right, her fifth of the season. With two on and two out, Timberman doubled to center, giving Lehigh an 8-1 edge going to the bottom of the fifth.
Wright capped the scoring with her second two-run double of the game, this one coming with two outs in the sixth. Sophomore Emily Sorem then worked around a leadoff single to close out game two in six innings. Sorem improved to 8-7 with a line of one unearned run on six hits. She walked one and struck out five.
Lattanzio joined Rabago, Wright and Timberman in recording two hits in the nightcap.
