Mountain Hawks Sweep Doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's to Close Out Regular Season

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Lehigh softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary's in non-league action Saturday at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mountain Hawks won game one 6-1 and then erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run sixth inning to take game two 4-3.

First-year Kelly Fricker homered and totaled five hits, while sophomore Peyton Sward totaled four hits over the doubleheader. The Mountain Hawks improved to 28-22 overall and enter next week's Patriot League Tournament having won five consecutive games.

Lehigh started fast in game one, with the Mountain Hawks scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Lindsey Martin delivered a two-out, two-run double to center field to open the scoring and then scored on a single up the middle by Sward.

Mount St. Mary's (10-40) scored its lone run of game one off a Lehigh error in the second inning.

The Mountain Hawks answered in the top of the third, with senior Rory Dudley tripling to right center to score classmate Julia Mrochko.

Fricker hit her second home run of the season out to right field with one out in the sixth inning, and junior Sydney Parlett tripled home first-year Lizzie Kern with Lehigh's sixth run.

Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle and earned the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits over four innings with three strikeouts. Senior Maria Urban threw the final three innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Lehigh had 10 hits in game one, led by Fricker's three. Martin and Sward added two.

The Mount took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two as Brianna Manni's infield single scored Gina Del Giorno. The Mountaineers added two more runs in the fifth inning on a single by Tristin Koerner combined with a Lehigh error.

Fricker led off the sixth with a bunt single and scored on a triple to right center by Mrochko. Dudley then followed with an RBI single to score Mrochko. After a sacrifice bunt, Martin singled up the middle, bringing Dudley home with the tying run. A ground out moved Martin to third and first-year Wrigley Fanter put Lehigh in front with an infield single that scored Martin to put the Mountain Hawks up 4-3.

Sophomore Maddy Clark came on in relief of first-year Madison Finnerty and worked around a two-out single in the sixth before hurling a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the doubleheader sweep.

Finnerty allowed three runs on six hits over five innings. She walked three and struck out six. Clark retired six of the seven batters she faced to earn the save.

The Mountain Hawks totaled 12 hits in the nightcap, with Fricker, Dudley, Sward and first-year Helen Woloshyn all recording two.

Lehigh will be the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, which begins Thursday at the Army Softball Complex at West Point, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks will open the tournament against No. 2 Boston University at a time to be determined.
