PHILADELPHIA - No. 12 Penn used a 9-0 first-half run to break open a 2-2 tie, on its way to topping the Lehigh women's lacrosse team, 17-9 on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks (2-2) rebounded in the second half to outscore the Quakers 6-5, but the hole proved too much for Lehigh to overcome. Sophomore Kaitlyn Quinn paced the offense with three goals for her first-career hat trick.
"Penn is a top team," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They have a lot of people who go hard. Their draw control was one of the big differences in the game."
Junior Haley Wentzel scored twice to eclipse 50 career points while senior Allison LaBeau had three points behind a goal and two assists. Wentzel tied for the team lead with three caused turnovers, along with senior Julianne D'Orazio and junior Alexis King. Senior Lauren Beausoleil had an assist and game-high four groundballs.
Freshman Sondra Dickey gave Lehigh an early 1-0 lead less than 2:30 into the game, Penn responded with the next two goals, but Quinn scored her first of the day to tie the score at two with 18:17 left in the first half.
Penn answered with a 9-0 run and 10 of the next 11 goals to take a 12-3 halftime advantage. The Quakers' lead eventually reached 14-4, but the Mountain Hawks scored five of the game's final eight goals. Three straight goals, two coming from Wentzel, pulled Lehigh within 14-7. D'Orazio and Quinn accounted for the Mountain Hawks' final goals in the 17-9 defeat.
"We changed a couple things in the second half," said Redfern. "We started to play our zone a little bit more on defense and that was definitely our friend. I think they had a harder time finding their looks against it and we got some great caused turnovers, which is definitely a positive takeaway from today."'
The Quakers finished with a 35-21 edge in shots and 19-8 advantage in draw controls while Lehigh held a 23-22 edge in groundballs. Senior Taylor Tvedt had four saves while junior Elizabeth Nussbaum came in and made three.
Lehigh will continue its four-game road swing this Saturday when it travels to Richmond to face the Spiders. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
