Lehigh surges past Richmond for 9-7 road victory

3/11/2017 5:13:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

RICHMOND, Va. - Late in the first half, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team began a 4-0 run to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead early, which was more than enough in a strong 9-7 win at Richmond on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders pulled as close as 7-6, but the Mountain Hawks (3-2) responded with the next two goals, on the way to their third win of the season. Sophomore Kaitlyn Quinn led the offense with a career-high four goals for her second straight hat trick.

"It was a great team win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Our team battled for 60 minutes and they were rewarded. Our team defense was very good today and we were patient on the offensive end."

Quinn added an assist for a career-high five points while two other Mountain Hawks had two goals; sophomore Courtney Henig recorded four points (two goals, two assists) and junior Haley Wentzel tallied three (two goals, one assist). Senior Allison LaBeau also posted three points behind a goal and two assists.

Wentzel added a team-high four draw controls while junior Alexis King recorded three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Richmond opened the scoring, but Lehigh scored two straight and three of the next four goals as Henig's second of the game gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-2 advantage with 10:10 remaining in the first half. The Spiders answered with the next two, but Lehigh ended the first half with three unanswered goals, all coming in the final 1:49. The half was capped off by consecutive goals from Wentzel, with 1:33 and 0:17 remaining, to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 halftime lead.

Quinn's hat trick goal extended the run to 4-0 less than five minutes into the second half. Richmond scored two in a row, but Quinn again answered, scoring her fourth of the game at the 17:24 mark. LaBeau scored less than a minute later to give Lehigh a 9-6 advantage, which was more than enough in the 9-7 win.

Final shots were even at 25 while the Mountain Hawks held a 22-16 edge in groundballs. Richmond finished with 11 draw controls compared to seven for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks turned the ball over a season-low 14 times compared to 19 for Richmond. Senior Taylor Tvedt finished with eight saves.

The Mountain Hawks will stay in Richmond to take on Virginia Commonwealth University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The team will then open its Patriot League schedule at Holy Cross next Saturday, Mar. 18.
