Mountain Hawks cruise past VCU, 16-6

RICHMOND, Va. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-3 halftime lead and didn't look back, opening a 16-2 advantage on the way to an impressive 16-6 win on Monday. Freshman Sondra Dickey helped lead the charge, posting career highs in goals (4), points (5), groundballs (4) and caused turnovers (3). Senior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt tied a season-high 10 saves while allowing just three goals. The Mountain Hawks (4-2) won their second road game in three days and now look ahead to their Patriot League opener at Holy Cross on Saturday.

Junior Haley Wentzel added three goals for her fourth-career hat trick, second this season. Senior Lauren Beausoleil and sophomore Courtney Henig each scored twice. In total, nine different Mountain Hawks scored a goal while 11 had a point.

"It was the first time we've had so many people in the scoring column, so we're excited for the balanced offense," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Sondra had the type of game that we love, a complete game on both ends of the field and through the middle."

Defensively, junior Alexis King continued her strong play, with three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Senior Julianne D'Orazio filled up the stat sheet with a goal, four draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

VCU scored just 10 seconds into the game, but the Mountain Hawks responded with four straight and eight of the next nine goals. Dickey scored Lehigh's first two goals to give her team a 2-1 lead. Midway through the half, Wentzel and Henig alternated goals in another 4-0 Lehigh run, giving the Mountain Hawks an 8-2 advantage with 8:56 on the first-half clock.

The Rams pulled within 8-3, but Lehigh came right back with eight in a row from seven different scorers. Goals from D'Orazio, sophomore Kellie Gough and Beausoleil rounded out the scoring, giving Lehigh a 16-2 lead with 13:36 left in the second half. VCU pulled within 16-6 at the final buzzer, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Final shots were 34-24 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held the edge in groundballs (21-17) and draw controls (15-8). Tvedt stopped 10-of-13 shots sent her way before being relieved by junior Elizabeth Nussbaum, who made one save.

"Taylor made some key stops in the first half that allowed our offense to get rolling," said Redfern. "I'm proud of our team for winning two games on the road. We're feeling good going into Saturday and excited to get our league schedule underway."

The Mountain Hawks will next head to Holy Cross on Saturday, Mar. 18 for their Patriot League opener against the Crusaders. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
