BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead, then held off a second-half Wagner charge to defeat the Seahawks, 12-9 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Allison LaBeau led the Mountain Hawks' (2-1) offense with her second straight hat trick, finishing with three goals and two assists. Junior Kierstyn Voiro recorded a career-high six caused turnovers while posting a goal, assist and two groundballs as well.
"In the first half, we were able to put a few more sequences together and finish our shots where we struggled more to do that in the second," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Credit Wagner. They played a great second half; they didn't go away and made us work for it. In our last couple possessions, we were disciplined and were able to put a couple shots away to hang onto a two-goal lead, but it certainly wasn't easy."
Along with LaBeau's five points, senior Julianne D'Orazio scored two goals and dished two assists for four points. D'Orazio also had three draw controls, three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Kaitlyn Quinn scored two goals for the second time in the first three games this season.
Lehigh opened the game on a 4-0 run, the first two goals scored by LaBeau and the next two scored by D'Orazio. The Mountain Hawks eventually opened a 6-1 advantage with 8:16 on the first-half clock following Voiro's first goal of the season. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the half as LaBeau's third tally gave Lehigh an 8-3 lead following 30 minutes of play.
Wagner opened the second half on a 3-0 run, scoring five of the first six to pull as close as 9-8 with 19:28 still on the clock. However, Lehigh buckled down, getting goals from junior Haley Wentzel, Quinn and senior Lauren Beausoleil while allowing just one goal over the final 19:28, including none over the final 13:47, on the way to the 12-9 final.
The Mountain Hawks finished with a 29-21 edge in shots, 21-20 advantage in groundballs and 13-9 edge in draw controls. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt made eight saves, allowing six goals in 53:30 for the Mountain Hawks, while Wagner's Kelsey Fee made nine.
Lehigh isnow set for a four-game road swing, beginning this coming Tuesday (Mar. 7) at No. 10 Penn at 1 p.m.
