Mountain Hawks wrap up action at the Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up its second weekend of the spring schedule on Saturday when it competed in the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River. The day was highlighted by the Men's Varsity Eight and Junior Varsity Eight reaching their respective Pettite Finals.
"I thought we had a good effort today, but we definitely learned there are some fitness and technical things we need to work on," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley.
In its initial heat, the Men's Varsity Eight placed fourth (6:11.68) before posting a time of 6:10.46 in the petite final. The Junior Varsity Eight came in fourth in the morning heat (6:46.47) before recording a time of 6:24.40 in the petite final.
"I think those two boats learned in the finals what racing is at a high level," said Conley. "It was fun to watch them go off the line and be more aggressive than they were in the heats."
In total, there were 10 more teams in this year's Murphy Cup, providing an extremely competitive day of racing.
"The Murphy Cup is way more competitive than it was two years ago, or even last year," said Conley. "We were able to raise our game a little bit more because we're learning as a culture what we need to do and how to do it."
Lehigh will return to action next Saturday, Apr. 1 when it hosts rival Lafayette in the River Cup on Lack Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa.
