Drexel Edges Lehigh in Sunday Match

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis put forth a valiant effort in a spirited contest against Drexel at home on Sunday, but the Dragons edged out the Mountain Hawks in the singles competition to leave with the 4-2 victory. Drexel improves to 4-1 and Lehigh falls to 0-4 in its closest match of the young season.
Lehigh was flying high early after winning the doubles portion of the match, giving Lehigh its first win at either doubles or singles of the season. The Mountain Hawk pairing of Jack Petersen and Graham Lehman notched the first of two doubles victories with a 6-2 victory at flight No. 2 over Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou. Drexel scored a convincing 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Ethan Bogard and Colin Nardella battled to a 7-5 victory at flight No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for Lehigh.
The Dragons soon erased the Lehigh lead and put the Mountain Hawks in a hole by finishing with the first three singles wins. Lehigh put a stop to the Drexel run when George Cooper scored a big win at No. 1 singles. Cooper notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Laalej for his first win of the season.
Trailing 3-2 with two matches still in progress, Lehigh had a chance at a victory. The deciding match came to No. 6 singles where Drexel's Daniil Ginzburg survived a hard-fought battle with Lehman to clinch the match for the Dragons.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday and will face its second-straight CAA opponent when Delaware makes the trip to the Lewis Tennis Center for a 12 p.m. showdown.
