BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will search for its first win of the season as it travels to take on Iona on Saturday in New Rochelle, New York. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast for free online through IonaInsider. The Mountain Hawks are coming off an 18-9 loss at No. 7 Penn State last Saturday, a game which saw them within striking distances with 15 minutes remaining.
Junior attacker/midfielder Haley Wentzel led Lehigh with a career-high tying four goals against the Nittany Lions, which helped her earn honorable mention recognition on the Patriot League weekly honor roll. Meanwhile, senior Lauren Beausoleil and sophomore Kaitlyn Quinn each chipped in two goals. Beausoleil also posted three draw controls and a game-high five groundballs. Senior attacker Allison LaBeau, the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, finished the game with a goal and two assists. Senior goalie Taylor Tvedt also recorded 10 saves, just two shy of her career high, which she notched last year against Penn State. The Mountain Hawks caused 12 of Penn State's 14 turnovers for the game, led by three from senior Julianne D'Orazio.
Lehigh had a pair of impressive runs in the game, 3-0 in the first half and 4-0 in the second. Those four goals came in the span of 5:14 to pull the Mountain Hawks within 13-9 with 15:44 still remaining.
Iona comes into the game with a 2-1 record, including a 15-6 win most recently against Central Connecticut State. Junior attacker/midfielder Pamela Giordano leads Iona this season thus far with 11 goals, including five against Central Connecticut. Junior midfielder Jenna Tolzman has been a key player for the Gaels as well, tallying seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers, both of which lead the team. The team's one loss was a 10-0 defeat to Holy Cross on Feb. 18.
Lehigh holds wins over Iona in both of the previous two matchups in program history. The first came in 2011, a 14-9 win, and the second was a 14-11 win last year at home.
Following this game, the Mountain Hawks will have their first home game of the season on Saturday, Mar. 4 against Wagner at 1 p.m.
