More Titles and Accolades Roll in for Lehigh Swimming and Diving on Final Day of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their stay at the 2017 Patriot League Championships with a historical day as two more champions were crowned to go along with four more school records and two more NCAA provisional times. In addition to all the stellar performances by the student-athletes during the week, Lehigh head coach Rob Herb also received recognition for his outstanding contributions by being named the Patriot League Women's Coach of the Year (also earned the same honor in 2014).
The women wrapped up a stellar week at the championship meet and finished in third place with 528 points. Navy took the top spot with 868.5 points and Army West Points placed second with 537.5 points. The women's third place finish is the highest since also placing third in 2003.
The men also capped off an outstanding week in Lewisburg by placing fifth in the standings with 343.5 points. Navy claimed the title with 846 points, while Army placed second with 786 points, followed by Boston in third with 498.5 points. The Lehigh men have now placed fifth or better in 26 of 27 meets since the first Patriot League Championship meet in 1991.
One of Lehigh's two champions on the day was crowned in the first finals event of day with the 1650 freestyle. Junior Meghan Thompson led all 28 swimmers entered in the event with the top time of 16:32.57 after entering the event without a seed time. Thompson's time also lowered the school record and became Lehigh's first women's champion in the event since 2001. The junior led the team by compiling 52 total points on the week to finish third in the overall women's individual standings.
Lehigh saw another champion crowned on the day, this time on the men's side and in the 100 freestyle. Senior Justin White edged out a strong field of competitors with his winning time of 44.06. White's pace lowered the old school record mark of 44.51, which has stood since 2009. His time also meets the NCAA provisional cut standard and finished the meet with provisional times in two different events. The senior led the Lehigh men with 49 points on the week and finished with the fourth-highest point total in the overall men's individual standings.
The Mountain Hawks had another individual school record come off the board on Saturday with the women's 200 butterfly. Sydney Bornstein put together an outstanding performance and placed second with a time of 2:00.54, breaking her own school record mark of 2:01.90 set last year.
The women lit up the board in the 200 butterfly as all four entrants scored points. In addition to Bornstein, Kelly Carroll also placed in the finals with a fifth place finish. Cora Summerfield won the consolation finals and placed ninth overall, while Valerie Lauer rounded out the group with a 12th place finish.
Another NCAA B-Cut time came in for the men after Jacob Moyar completed his performance in the 200 butterfly. The senior battled through a tough field of entrants to place second with a time of 1:46.97, just over the school record mark of 1:48.78. Moyar finished as one of three swimmers to earn NCAA provisional marks in the event.
The Mountain Hawks ended their stay at the Patriot League Championships by lowering another school record in the final women's event of the meet. Julianne Koch, Thompson, Payton Miles and Kaitlyn Ruffing teamed up in the 400 freestyle relay and placed second with a stellar time of 3:21.37. Their time finished under the old school record mark of 3:21.37 set last season.
The men's and women's programs put together the best combined performance at the Patriot League Championships in the last decade. The three combined championships is the highest combined total since the two teams combined for three in 2002. The two titles on the women's side is the first time the women have had multiple champions since Lauren Ayers and Linsey Kokal combined for three titles in 2001.
