Lehigh Drops a Pair to Richmond to Open Spring Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis squad opened up its 2017 spring schedule on Saturday with a pair of opening day losses at home to Richmond inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Spiders won the morning match by a score 7-0 before hand the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 loss in the evening dual.
The Spiders (4-2) got the jump on the Mountain Hawks (0-2) early on by getting the necessary two victories in the doubles competition in match one at flights two and three. Richmond then proceeded to sweep the doubles portion with a victory at No. 3 doubles in a closely contested match in which James Aronson and Stathi Kyriakides edged out George Cooper and Christopher Auteri by a score of 7-5.
Richmond continued to roll as the singles flights got underway. Canyon Teague clinched the match for the Spiders at No. 4 singles with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Jack Petersen.
Colin Nardella won Lehigh's only set of the day with a 7-5 victory over James Aronson in the second set at No. 5 singles. Aronson earned a 7-5 victory in the first set and then picked up a 10-5 win in the third to clinch the victory over Nardella.
The two teams played an abbreviated match in the nightcap. Richmond picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before play was suspended at flight No. 2.
After recording wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, Aronson clinched the match for Richmond at No. 4 singles with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Petersen.
The Mountain Hawks have another tall task ahead as they travel to Penn State for their next match on February 4. Lehigh returns home again of February 5 to face Drexel.
