Valiant effort at Loyola falls just short in overtime, 14-13

BALTIMORE - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the final five goals in regulation to even the score at 13, but couldn't complete the comeback as Loyola scored just over a minute into overtime to hand the Mountain Hawks only their third loss of the season on Saturday afternoon. Junior Allison LaBeau led the offense with six goals and an assist as Lehigh nearly became the first team to ever hand the Greyhounds a Patriot League defeat. The Mountain Hawks fall to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in league play while Loyola improves to 9-5 and 6-0 in the Patriot League.

"I'm proud of our effort and our execution down the stretch, just to rally back like that and keep going hard at the cage," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "To tie the score and force overtime was something we're really proud of."

LaBeau's career-high tying six goals came on just seven shots as she reached exactly 100 goals in her decorated career. Junior Lauren Beausoleil enjoyed a strong game with two goals, one assist, three groundballs and two draw controls. Junior Julianne D'Orazio scored the game-tying goal in the final minutes and finished with two goals on the day. She added two groundballs and a career-high seven draw controls. Freshman Annie Pearson had a goal, groundball and three draw controls while classmate Courtney Henig and sophomore Kierstyn Voiro scored the Mountain Hawks' other goals.

"Alli's performance was nothing short of spectacular," said Redfern. "She saw the cage really well. She wants the ball, is willing to take shots when we need goals and she puts them away."

Goals from Henig and Voiro gave Lehigh a quick 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Loyola responded with three straight goals, but the Mountain Hawks quickly answered with a 3-0 run of their own in the span of 4:29, including LaBeau's 32nd and 33rd goals of the season, to give Lehigh a 5-3 lead with 13:20 left in the first half.

The Greyhounds began to create separation late in the first half and into the second, going on a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage with 26:55 on the second-half clock. D'Orazio ended the run by taking a pass from senior Kendall Garden and finishing her first goal of the game. The teams traded goals over the ensuing 15 minutes as Loyola took a 13-8 lead with 12:28 on the clock.

The Mountain Hawks wouldn't back down, scoring the next five goals. Beausoleil began the run at the 11:38 mark then LaBeau pulled Lehigh within 13-10 at 5:05. Pearson pulled Lehigh closer at 2:54 then LaBeau scored her sixth of the afternoon, and 100th of her career, just 47 seconds later. D'Orazio converted a free-position goal with 33 seconds remaining to tie the score at 13.

Loyola won the opening draw control of overtime and scored just over one minute later to escape with the 14-13 victory.

Final shots were 27-25 in favor of Loyola while groundballs were even at 13. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 15-14 edge in draw controls. Junior Taylor Tvedt made 10 saves for Lehigh while a pair of Greyhound goalkeepers combined for nine. The game saw just 17 combined turnovers, nine for Lehigh and eight from Loyola.

"We have a great group," said Redfern. "They play really hard, play together and don't give up."

The Mountain Hawks now return home next Wednesday to host archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m.

"We're excited for our Lafayette game and definitely excited to play at home," said Redfern. "We're excited to move forward in league play and complete the regular season with our best record possible."
