Lehigh tops Lafayette 6-4 to clinch third straight Patriot League Tournament berth

4/20/2016 9:44:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lafayette jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored six of the game's final eight goals to earn a 6-4 win over its archrivals on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. In the end, Lehigh's defense allowed just two goals over the game's final 43:18. With the win and Holy Cross' loss at Boston University, the Mountain Hawks clinched their third straight Patriot League Tournament berth. Lehigh improves to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.
"I'm really happy for our team to get this win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "It was definitely a tough game and a tough strategy by Lafayette for us to have to match. I'm just happy to come out with the win."

Freshman Courtney Henig led the offense with two goals while junior Julianne D'Orazio tallied a goal, assist, four groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Freshman Jane Henderson, sophomore Kayleen Kelly and senior Kendall Garden scored the Mountain Hawks' other goals.

"I am proud of our team," said Redfern. "They understand how to win games in different ways, so the fact that they were able to close out the game by holding the ball themselves (after Lafayette held the ball early in the first half) was vital and really made a difference at the end."

The Leopards scored the game's first goals, at the 18:12 and 13:18 marks to take a 2-0 lead. Lehigh responded with the next three goals as Kelly opened the scoring with a transition goal with 12:50 left in the first half. The Mountain Hawks followed with goals at the 9:36 and 6:06 marks to take a 3-2 lead.

Lafayette evened the score before halftime, but the Mountain Hawks began the second half with three straight goals, at 26:38 and 24:39 as Henig's first goal of the evening gave Lehigh a 5-3 advantage. Henig scored the game's next goal at 13:23. Lafayette pulled within 6-4 with 7:16 remaining, but the Mountain Hawks were able to close out the win.

For the game, the Leopards held a 16-15 edge in shots while Lehigh held an 11-9 advantage in groundballs. Lafayette finished with a 7-5 edge in draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt finished with eight save across the Leopards' Anna Raymond, who made three.

"I'm excited for our team, who is taking every game one at a time and has stuck to the game plan each and every game," said Redfern. "They've tried to put forth their best performance each time out. We're feeling reassured that we're in the Patriot League Tournament and we'll take things one step at a time."

The Mountain Hawks will head to Colgate on Saturday for a 1 p.m. opening draw.
