BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team claimed an impressive 5-2 win over visiting Saint Joseph's Saturday evening inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The win marks the Mountain Hawks' fifth-straight victory as Lehigh improves to 7-1 on the season. Saint Joseph's falls to 4-4 with the loss.
"We mixed things up in doubles and it paid off," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "This is a very confident and tenacious group. We unfortunately lost Auteri for the year but others are ready to step up."
Junior Ethan Bogard, sophomore Jack Petersen and freshman George Cooper each won their doubles and singles matches. Senior Jeremy Kochman clinched the match for Lehigh at the top flight of singles.
"Gutsy performance by our co-captain Jeremy Kochman who fought like a lion and clinched the match for us at the top flight," said Hendrix. "Petersen and Cooper were locked in three set battles and prevailed thanks to their fitness."
Cooper and Bogard got the evening started with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, before Petersen and freshman Bryant Born secured the doubles point for Lehigh with a 6-4 win at the third flight to give Lehigh a 1-0 match advantage.
Saint Joseph's evened the match at 1-1 as Andres Urrea defeated Born 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Petersen followed with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win at the third flight before Cooper secured a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Tristan Boustany at No. 4 singles to put Lehigh ahead 3-1. Kochman then clinched the match at No. 1 singles as he gutted out a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 come-from-behind win over Renier Moolman.
Andre Fick defeated junior Tyler Hansen 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to put another point on the board for the Hawks, but Bogard locked up the 5-2 Lehigh victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kevin Gates at the sixth flight.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. when Lehigh hosts Rider inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
