BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a strong effort at the Murphy Cup, the Lehigh rowing team now turns its attention to the River Cup against archrival Lafayette set for this Saturday. Racing begins at 10 a.m. on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown. The Mountain Hawks will look to continue their impressive all-time success against their archrivals.
Â
"We are seeing Lafayette this year for the first time as we have not seen them at any other regatta," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I think that adds a little bit more to the mystique of racing them this early in the season. We don't know what speed they have and we know there's always a little more to the race."
Â
Last season, Lehigh won the women's and overall trophies against the Leopards. In a unique best-of-three format 1000m races due to construction on the Lehigh River, Lehigh's "A" Women's Varsity Four crew came in first with a time of 4:18.22 then the "B" boat placed first the second time around (4:39.05).
Â
Saturday's race against their archrivals is always a meaningful event for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
"Our overall goal is to perform well at Patriots and Dad Vails, but there are steps to get there," said Conley. "Being able to perform against your rival and in front of alumni and parents really can put pressure on an athlete to step up, or to lose focus on what they're needing to do. This group has done a lot of work, both physically and mentally, to put themselves in a position to embrace the need to focus and not let pressures take away from our goal, but rather to enhance our effort."
Â
Last weekend's Murphy Cup was highlighted by the Women's Varsity Pair winning a Gold Medal. In total, four boats (Women's Varsity Pair, Men's Varsity Pair, Men's Novice Four and Men's Varsity Four) all rowed in the finals while the Women's Varsity Eight advanced to the petite finals.
Â
"We celebrated the great racing over the weekend and the team went right back to fundamentals," said Conley. "We know that if we don't really take each stroke together, it doesn't matter how efficient individuals are or how strong they are, the boat will not go. So the team took a little time this week to look at how we can find more free speed, and intelligent speed."
Â
Even though it's Lafayette, the goal continues to be the same on Saturday.
Â
"The goal is to bring the effort that we bring to each practice to each race," said Conley. "Athletes will race multiple times and the goal of the team is to beat Lafayette in as many events as possible."
Â
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 16 at the Kerr Cup.
