Mountain Hawks wrap up River Cup against Lafayette Saturday

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed an up-and-down performance against archrival Lafayette at the River Cup Saturday, led by the Women's Varsity Eight, which won its race.
"I thought the effort was great. However, it was a little bit disappointing that we couldn't get the job done to get the overall trophy," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The women did a great job sweeping all the events and the Men's Varsity Four held true to the speed they've been finding all year."
Lehigh and Lafayette split the Varsity Eights, (Men's and Women's), so the overall River Cup came down to the Men's Novice Four, which the Leopards won.
"It's a fantastic rivalry," said Conley. "You know they'll bring their best race against us and we try to bring our best against them. Today, they came out a little bit more on top than we did."
The Women's Varsity Eight finished in first with a time of 6:46.64 to really set the tone for the Mountain Hawks.
"They went out and got the job done, held their own even though they had not the best of starts." said Conley. "They were able to recover quickly and still win the race."
The Men's Varsity Four finished in first with a time of 6:51.10 while the Women's Varsity Four (7:35.38), Novice Eight (7:01.60) and Novice Four (7:41.00) all won their races as well.
Lehigh will return to action in two Saturdays (Apr. 16) at the Kerr Cup.
"These two weeks are going to be huge for us in terms of getting our academics under control so we can compete at this late point in the season and feel good going into our championships," said Conley.
