NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Lehigh women's rowing team enjoyed a strong performance on the Raritan River on Saturday against Rutgers and Holy Cross, highlighted by the Varsity Eight which defeated the Crusaders for the first time since 2007. The Second Varsity Eight also put forth a strong performance, but fell just short.
"Both boats raced tremendously way and raced within themselves, which is something we were talking about this week," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Both boats executed exactly what we wanted them to do. It was exciting to watch them race."
The Varsity Eight finished with a time of 6:42.3, behind Rutgers (6:34.3), but ahead of Holy Cross (6:47.6). The Second Varsity Eight also stayed in contact with Holy Cross until the halfway point of the race, finishing with a time of 7:16.6 behind Rutgers (6:54.6) and Holy Cross (7:04.0).
"Being in contact with Holy Cross compared to where we were early in the season was a huge step for that boat," said Conley.
Overall, Saturday was a tangible example of the Mountain Hawks' improvement and a day to build upon moving forward.
"I think we learned and saw today, when we were watching the Varsity Eight race, that as they grew more confident, you could see that confidence reflected in their rowing," said Conley. "The more confident they got in the race, the faster their boat raced. For us, having that momentum going into the Patriot League Championships is great; we haven't had that before in the last five years."
The women return to action next Saturday against Delaware and La Salle on the Schuylkill River while the men will row against La Salle.
