Lehigh’s winning streak snapped at Navy, 11-5

3/30/2016 9:31:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored the game's first two goals, but Navy used a 4-0 run to open a 7-4 lead, on its way to a 11-5 win on Wednesday evening inside Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Junior Allison LaBeau scored two goals while classmate Taylor Tvedt made eight saves in goal for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh's seven-game winning streak comes to an end as they fall to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League play heading into a big Saturday afternoon matchup at Boston University.

"Navy had a better effort than we did tonight in both execution and aggressiveness," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They were the better team tonight and were deserving on the win."

Along with LaBeau, senior Kendall Garden, sophomore Haley Wentzel and freshman Jane Henderson scored Lehigh's other goals while junior Lauren Beausoleil and sophomore Kierstyn Voiro each tallied two groundballs and a caused turnover. Garden added a team-high three draw controls, a groundball and caused turnover.

After more than nine minutes without a goal, Garden opened the scoring at the 20:28 mark. Just over one minute later, LaBeau converted a free-position goal to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

Navy answered with the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead, but Lehigh came right back with the next two, free-position goals from Wentzel and Henderson, to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-3 advantage with 8:12 on the first-half clock.

However, the Mids went on to score the next four goals, taking a 5-3 lead at the break than a 6-3 advantage at 25:01 of the second half. LaBeau ended Lehigh's scoreless drought at the 23:36 mark, pulling the Mountain Hawks within 7-5.

Lehigh had several opportunities to pull closer, but couldn't beat Navy goalkeeper Ingrid Boyum, who finished with six second-half saves. Three came in a 46-second span midway through the half to help thwart Lehigh's attack. Tvedt also impressed, which included making a point-blank stop on a two-on-none to keep her squad down 8-5. It wasn't enough, as the Mids offense ended the game on a 4-0 run to wrap up the 11-5 final.

Final shots were 23-16 in favor of Navy while the Midshipmen held a 15-12 edge in groundballs and 11-7 advantage in draw controls. Tvedt's eight saves came across Boyum, who finished with seven.

"I think Taylor did a nice job," said Redfern. "In the end, the ball was on our defensive end too much for us to be able to close the gap.

The Mountain Hawks will now travel to Boston University this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. opening draw.

"Every game is a quality experience for us. The aggression of the Navy team is something we haven't seen," said Redfern. "It will definitely help us. We have to get better moving forward and learn from this game."
