BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team fell behind 5-1 at the half, but went on to outscore Boston University 7-2 in the second to pick up a thrilling 8-7 win on Saturday. Junior Lauren Beausoleil scored the game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining to give Lehigh its eighth win in the last nine games. The Mountain Hawks improve to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League play while the Terriers fall to 5-6 and 3-2 in the league.
The Terriers ended the first half on a 5-0 run, but Lehigh didn't waste any time turning the tides in the second, scoring three goals in the first 6:37 to set the tone.
"I think our change of mentality was important in the second half," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We were down and had nothing to lose. It was time to take some chances and be more aggressive."
Freshman Courtney Henig, sophomore Haley Wentzel and junior Allison LaBeau scored those three goals to pull the Mountain Hawks within 5-4. The Terriers took a 6-4 lead, but goals from LaBeau and Beausoleil knotted the score at six with 12:14 on the second-half clock. Boston University again took a lead, but Henig scored with 2:01 remaining and Beausoleil with five seconds to go, giving the Mountain Hawks the thrilling victory.
The first half saw LaBeau score just 1:51 into the game, but the Terriers scored the final five goals. Both goalkeepers were strong in the first half as Lehigh junior Taylor Tvedt made five saves while the Terriers' Caroline Meegan had six.
LaBeau led the offense with three goals and one assist for the game while Beausoleil and Henig each scored twice. Lehigh's defense was stellar, allowing just one goal over the game's first 21:55 and allowing just two in the second half. Sophomore Kayleen Kelly led the defense with three caused turnovers while senior Julianne D'Orazio had four draw controls. Sophomore Kierstyn Voiro tallied three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Final shots were 22-20 in favor of the Terriers while the Mountain Hawks held a 17-9 edge in groundballs and 10-7 advantage in draw controls. Tvedt finished with seven saves while Meegan made nine.
"I thought our team played great defense," said Redfern. "They followed our game plan really well. A lot of girls came up big back there. Kayleen (Kelly) had some caused turnovers, (Kierstyn) Voiro and Jules (Julianne D'Orazio) were really good and Liv (Olivia Kelly) had a big one at a key time. We saw lots of contributions from all them."
The Mountain Hawks now return home for two straight games, hosting Rutgers on Tuesday and Army West Point next Saturday. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
"It was a day for not giving up and I'm hoping that's what we learned," said Redfern. "That's the type of team we can be. I'm really proud of our team."
