BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will put its streak on the line Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Annapolis, Md. for a matchup with Navy. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. Most recently, Lehigh earned a 10-6 win over American Saturday to improve to 2-0 in Patriot League play and 7-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks' 7-1 start to the season is their best since 2010 when they began 8-0. The seven-game winning streak is also the program's longest since that season.
Lehigh's offense has been led by junior attacker Allison LaBeau, who is coming off a three-goal and two-assist performance in Saturday's 10-6 victory. LaBeau's 21 goals, 19 assists and 40 total points on the season are tops on the team and among the best in the Patriot League, and nation. LaBeau has plenty of help, including freshman Courtney Henig, who scored two goals on Saturday and is now up to 17 goals on the season, second on the team.
Junior Lauren Beausoleil also scored two goals against American while adding three groundballs as well. Sophomore Haley Wentzel added two points (one goal, one assist). Junior goalkeeper Taylor Tvedt was stellar on Saturday, stopping seven of the first eight shots sent her way and finishing the game with 10 saves, the second time this season she's recorded double-figure stops. For the season, Tvedt now owns a strong 6.97 GAA (first in the Patriot League) and .495 save percentage (third). Lehigh's defense has excelled, allowing seven goals or fewer in six of the eight games thus far.
The Mountain Hawks have seen tremendous contributions in the midfield as well, led by senior Kendall Garden. Impacting the game on both ends of the field, Garden has tallied nine goals on the season in addition to 17 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers. She scored Lehigh's seventh goal of the game Saturday, which proved to be the game-winner. Beausoleil owns 10 goals, four assists, a team-leading 21 groundballs and team-leading 13 draw controls on the season.
The Navy Midshipmen stand 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, dropping their first two contests against Patriot League opponents Loyola (8-2) and Holy Cross (7-6). Despite standing winless in the Patriot League so far, Navy has wins over Villanova, Virginia Tech, George Washington, Longwood and Liberty. The Midshipmen are led by sophomore midfielder Jenna Collins and junior attacker Morgan Young. Collins leads the team with 22 goals on the season to go along with five assists while Young has tallied 17 goals and four assists. Collins also leads the team in groundballs (16) and draw controls (33) and she's second in caused turnovers (11). Freshman midfielder Marie Valenti leads the way in caused turnovers with 12. Sophomore Ingrid Boyum has started all nine games in goal, tallying an 8.60 GAA and .427 save percentage.
Navy beat Lehigh last season by a score of 8-3, with Collins tallying a goal and two assists for the Midshipmen and LaBeau notching two goals for the Mountain Hawks. The Mids now lead the all-time series, 7-4. Lehigh won four of the first six meetings, but Navy has responded with five straight victories.
Following Wednesday's matchup at Navy, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Boston University this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. opening draw.
