Lehigh hosts Navy in midweek clash Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to get back on track Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks host Navy in a 7 p.m. contest that will have important implications on the Patriot League standings. Tickets are available at Lehightickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME.
The Mountain Hawks have dropped back-to-back games to Bucknell (67-54) and Holy Cross (77-71 OT) and Lehigh currently sits in a tie for third place in the Patriot League standings with an 8-5 league record that is part of a 15-9 overall mark. The Mountain Hawks are one game up on Navy and Loyola, the two teams tied for fifth in the standings with 7-6 league records.
Lehigh erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to take a late lead in its most recent game Saturday at Holy Cross, but the Crusaders' Lisa Mifsud hit a game-tying three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime before Holy Cross outscored the Mountain Hawks 10-4 in the extra period to capture a 77-71 overtime victory at the Hart Center. Junior Lexi Martins led Lehigh with her 18th double-double of the season behind 19 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Quinci Mann followed with 15 points, while classmate Bernadette Devaney chipped in nine. Senior Kerry Kinek pulled down ten rebounds.
For the season, Martins leads Lehigh with 14.6 points and 14.2 rebounds per game. Her rebound average ranks second-best in the nation, while her 18 double-doubles rank third. Martins is just five rebounds away from breaking her own single-season school rebound record of 344 boards.
Navy carries a three-game winning streak into Stabler Arena as the Mids have captured victories over Colgate (62-58), Loyola (45-38) and Lafayette (64-48). Navy jumped out to a 21-7 lead over Lafayette at the end of the first quarter and led by double figures for the final 32 minutes of a 64-48 victory in the team's most recent action Saturday. Sarita Condie led the team with 13 points, while Taylor Dunham followed with 11. Ashanti Kennedy pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
For the season, Dunham and Condie lead the team's offensive attack with 11.5 and 11.4 points per game, respectively. Navy has held its opponents to 55.1 points per game, which ranks second best in the Patriot League.
The Mountain Hawks were able to snap an eight-game losing streak to Navy in the season's first meeting in Annapolis, Md. as Lehigh picked up a close 51-48 victory on Jan. 20. Lehigh came out on top of a defensive battle that saw 11 lead changes and four ties to capture its first win over Navy since Jan. 25, 2012. Navy led 48-44 with 2:36 left in the game, but the Mountain Hawks scored the final seven points to earn the 51-48 win. Martins secured her 14th double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds, including an offensive putback with 1:25 left in the game that gave Lehigh the lead for good. Mann added 10 points to secure her 11th-straight double-digit scoring effort. Freshman Hailey Pascoe chipped in a career-high nine points, while Kinek tallied eight points and 12 rebounds. Navy was led by Condie with 15 points and Peri Curtis with 12.
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the field, 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from three-point range and 50 percent (7-for-14) from the free throw line. Lehigh limited Navy to a 35.8 (19-for-53) field goal percentage and 27.8 percent (5-for-18) clip from downtown. Lehigh controlled a 42-33 rebound advantage.
