Martins breaks single-season rebound record in 62-54 loss to Navy

2/17/2016 9:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit to pull within one, but couldn't compete the comeback as Navy earned a 62-54 win Wednesday evening at Stabler Arena. Junior Lexi Martins led Lehigh with her 19th double-double of the season and set a new Lehigh single-season rebound record in the process. The Mountain Hawks fall to 15-10 overall and 8-6 in Patriot League play, while the Mids pick up their fourth-straight win to improve to 14-11 overall and 8-6 in league action.

"The second quarter was the difference in the game and we really struggled on both ends of the floor," said head coach Sue Troyan. "Navy played a good defensive game and took us out of what we wanted to do. We need to get back in our rhythm and be more consistent."

Martins finished the game with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Her fifth rebound of the game gave her 345 for the season, besting her own school record of 344 that was set last season. Senior Kerry Kinek and sophomore Quinci Mann both chipped in ten points.

"Lexi has had a tremendous season," said Troyan. "It's an amazing accomplishment. She's a tremendous rebounder who is great at tracking the ball and gives us great consistency."

Navy was led by Christina Potts with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 41.2 percent (21-for-51) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from three-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Navy shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the floor, 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from downtown and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. The Mids held a 32-31 rebound advantage.

A three-pointer from freshman Hailey Pascoe gave Lehigh an early 3-2 lead before five points from Mann and a Martins layup comprised a 7-0 Mountain Hawk run over the next minute and a half as Lehigh jumped ahead 10-2 with 7:10 left on the first-quarter clock. The Mids answered with a 7-2 run to trim to Mountain Hawk lead to 14-11 three minutes later, but a Kinek jumper and Pascoe layup followed as Lehigh pulled ahead 18-11 with just over two minutes left in the term. Navy scored the next six points to pull within one at 18-17, but a last-second bank shot from senior Elizabeth Sharlow ended the quarter as Lehigh controlled a 20-17 lead.

The Mids scored five of the second quarter's first seven points to tie the score at 22 with 7:30 left in the half. A Kinek layup gave Lehigh a two-point cushion, but Navy spent the final 6:48 of the quarter on a 14-2 run as the Mountain Hawks went just 1-for-9 from the field and the Mids carried a 36-26 lead into halftime.

Navy scored the first four points of the second half to extend its lead to 40-26. A Martins conventional three-point play snapped the Mids' streak and kicked off a 7-4 Lehigh run that also saw four points from Sharlow as the Mountain Hawks trimmed the Navy lead to 44-33 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Two minutes later, a Kinek layup and pair of Martins free throws had Lehigh back within single digits for the first time since the second quarter with the score at 46-37 with 2:36 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks held Navy scoreless for the next two minutes before sophomore Taylor Campbell drained a big three-pointer with 47 seconds on the clock and Martins followed with a pair of last-second free throws to cap Lehigh's 9-0 quarter-ending run and pull the Mountain Hawks within 46-42.

Navy jumped ahead 50-44 early on in the fourth quarter, but five-straight points from Mann put the score at 50-49 with 5:41 left in the game. Navy rattled off eight of the game's next 10 points to re-extend its lead to seven at 58-51 with 1:59 on the clock. Sophomore Bernadette Devaney drained a big three-pointer to give Lehigh some life, but the Mids scored the final four points of the game to capture a 62-54 win.

The Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when Lehigh heads to archrival Lafayette. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network with audio coverage live on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley.
