Lehigh Cruises to Victory Over West Chester in Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team ran away with a 200.5-98.5 victory over West Chester University on Friday at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks are now 1-1 on the season, while the Golden Rams are 2-2. Eight different Mountain Hawks captured first place finishes as LU totaled nine victories on the night.
"The women put forth an outstanding effort led by top performances by Kaitlyn Ruffing and Julianne Koch," said head coach Rob Herb. "Many of the underclassmen started to shine and contribute in all areas of the meet. It was truly a grand meet."
The duo of Kaitlyn Ruffing and Julianne Koch combined for four individual victories on the night. Ruffing placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.99 and captured the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.73. Koch claimed the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.47 and also claimed a victory in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.94.
Courtney Ferreira won the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.63 and placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.57.
Meghan Thompson took the top spot in the 500 freestyle with a winning pace of 5:08.01 and placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.56.
Nicole Shek claimed a victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.04 and placed second in the 200 backstroke at a pace of 2:09.89.
Loeva Palu-Benson placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:09.19 and claimed second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.01.
Sydney Bornstein won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.48 and captured second place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.64.
Kelly Carroll placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time 58.18. Carroll captured two second place finishes in the 200 butterfly 2:08.32 and the 200 IM.
Payton Miles captured a pair of second place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
The Mountain Hawks took the two top spots in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Shek, Palu-Benson, Carroll and Ruffing produced the winning time of 3:57.00. Autumn Shaffer, Allison Morel, Bornstein and Miles combined to take second with at time of 4:01.74.
Lehigh also took the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay as Miles, Koch, Amanda Zlottnikoff and Ruffing combined for the winning time of 1:37.13.
The Mountain Hawks return to Jacobs Pool on Saturday to face Rider in a dual meet starting at 1 p.m.
