BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team will look to continue its winning momentum as the Mountain Hawks close out the regular season with matches against Army West Point and archrival Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks have won four of their last five, including three straight Patriot League wins over Colgate, Bucknell and Loyola.
Lehigh's victory over Bucknell on Tuesday was its first win over the Bison since 2006. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point and scored victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 flights to take home a narrow 4-3 victory. Abby Farrell provided a win over Melissa Parks at the No. 6 flight in her final home match of her career. Farrell is the lone senior on the Mountain Hawks' roster.
Sophomore Briana Maravich provided the match-clinching point for the Mountain Hawks at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Bucknell's Madeline Melch.
Against Loyola, the Mountain Hawks swept doubles and won five singles matches on their way to a 6-1 victory. Farrell netted the clinching point at No. 6, while freshman Christina Auyeung continued her strong play this season with a hard fought, three set victory at the No. 1 singles flight. After dropping the first set 4-6, Auyeung battled back to win the second set 6-3, and the third set 10-8. Sophomore Jamie Campisi also scored a three set victory at No. 3 singles.
So far this spring, Army West Point has posted a 13-10 record overall, with a 4-2 record in the Patriot League. The Black Knights' only losses in the league came against Navy and Boston University, the defending league champions. The Lehigh match will be Army West Point's final match of the regular season, as the league begins to look ahead to the conference tournament next weekend at Colgate. Last season, Lehigh dropped a 5-2 final at the Lewis Tennis Center. Sophomores Cassidy Cruz and Campisi both won their singles matches last year against the Black Knights.
Lafayette, at 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the league, has struggled this season. The Leopards have lost five of their last six matches. Lehigh defeated Lafayette 6-1 in last year's version of the rivalry. The Mountain Hawks have won 13 straight matches against Lafayette heading into Monday's match.
Lehigh will face Army West Point in West Point, N.Y., at noon on Saturday. On Monday, the Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season in Easton, Pa., to take on the Leopards at 3:30 p.m.
The Patriot League Tournament will begin April 23 at Colgate. Seeds and schedule for the tournament will be announced early next week.
