Lehigh dominates American 16-6 to earn Patriot League Tournament berth

4/12/2015 3:28:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team went on a 5-1 run late in the first half to turn a close one-goal lead into a four-goal halftime advantage, on the way to a dominant 16-6 victory at American on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks' fifth straight road win clinches Lehigh's second straight Patriot League Tournament berth. Lehigh has scored 15 or more goals in three of its last five road contests.

"I thought it was a great team effort," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We really stuck to our game plan of going hard to the goal cage. We had a lot of threats and opportunities, and I thought our defense played well too."

Senior Carli Sukonik and sophomore Allison LaBeau each scored four goals to lead the offense while junior Kendall Garden also added a hat trick. Freshman Haley Wentzel and sophomore Lauren Beausoleil each scored twice. Beausoleil added an assist and two caused turnovers as Lehigh caused nine of American's 12 turnovers for the game. On the other side, the Mountain Hawks turned the ball over just six times as a team.

"I'm really proud of that stat (just six turnovers)," said Redfern. "We made a big emphasis on (not turning the ball over) at practice and I think the team took it really seriously that they had to take care of the ball. They went out and executed."

Senior Kelly Scott helped lead the defense, tallying a groundball and caused turnover while shutting down American's second leading scorer Olivia Mangan by holding her without a point.

"I'm really proud to be going back to the Patriot League Tournament," said Redfern. "It's been a focus of our season all year. I think the team is really focused at our ultimate goal of peaking at the right time."

Lehigh jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as LaBeau scored an unassisted goal just 41 seconds into the game. American tied the score just 2:21 later, but after more than seven minutes without a goal from either side, the Mountain Hawks answered with two in a row, from Wentzel and Garden, to take a 3-1 lead with 17:33 on the clock.

The Eagles pulled within 3-2, but the Mountain Hawks began pulling away with five of the next six goals. The first two were scored by Beausoleil before LaBeau, Sukonik and Garden gave the Mountain Hawks an 8-3 advantage late in the first half. American scored with less than a minute on the clock to pull within 8-4 after 30 minutes of play.

Lehigh continued to roll in the second half, scoring the first six goals to erase any doubt. Four of the goals were scored in a 3:26 span, three of them scored by Sukonik. Eventually, Wentzel's second goal of the game made it 14-4 Mountain Hawks with 11:46 left in the second half.

Each team scored twice the rest of the way, good for the 16-6 victory.

Final shots were 29-20 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 13-10 edge in groundballs. American had a 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore goalie Taylor Tvedt made six saves, allowing just five goals before freshman Elizabeth Nussbaum stopped three of four sent her way over the final 4:07. Rose Redfoot made four stops for the Eagles.

Lehigh will travel to Holy Cross next Friday (Apr. 17) for the final game of the regular season.
