WORCESTER, Mass. - After trailing 2-0 early, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored three straight goals and went on to an 11-8 win over Holy Cross in the regular season finale on Friday. With the win, Lehigh will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the #5 seed and play at fourth-seeded Boston University on Tuesday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Four different Mountain Hawks scored two goals apiece, led by a game-high three points (two goals, one assist) from freshman Kierstyn Voiro. Freshman Haley Wentzel also scored twice, as did junior Kendall Garden and Lauren Beausoleil. Sophomore Taylor Tvedt impressed in goal, making nine saves.
"Taylor was a difference-maker today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Kendall was also a major contributor with big plays at crucial time."
After the early deficit, Beausoleil got Lehigh on the board at 18:55 before sophomore Krista Dampman and Voiro followed with tallies to make it 3-2 with 8:06 left in the first half. Crusaders leading scorer Laura Ryan scored what proved to be her only goal of the game at 7:24 as she was shut down by Lehigh senior defender Lauren Willcox.
Two straight goals from Kaitlin Concilio gave the Crusaders a 5-4 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks responded with five in a row bridging the end of the first half and beginning of the second. Senior Carli Sukonik finished the run at the 20:27 mark of the second half, taking a feed from Voiro and finding the back of the net. That made it 9-5 in favor of Lehigh.
Holy Cross responded with two of the next three goals, but Beausoleil scored her second goal in the final seconds for the 11-8 final.
Final shots were 24-16 in favor of Holy Cross while the groundballs were 19-13 in favor of the Crusaders. Lehigh held an 11-19 edge in draw controls. Tvedt's nine saves came across Katie Boyle, who made just one.
Lehigh will now travel to Boston University on Tuesday to face the Terriers in the league quarterfinals for a second straight season.
