BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Owning a 7-3 record over its last 10 games, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will take on Boston University Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. Following a strong regular season, the fifth-seeded Mountain Hawks begin the league tournament in Boston for a second straight season. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Lehigh is coming off an 11-8 victory over Holy Cross last Friday, but had already secured a playoff berth in its previous win over American. The Holy Cross victory did clinch the #5 seed and the right to travel to Boston University. The Mountain Hawks head into the postseason winning six of their last eight games to improve their mark to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in league play. They have also won five straight road games, at Mount St. Mary's, Bryant, Rutgers, American and Boston University. Lehigh is 7-2 on the road this season, winning seven straight after dropping its first two away from home.
In Friday's Holy Cross victory, four different Mountain Hawks scored two goals apiece, led by a game-high three points (two goals, one assist) from freshman Kierstyn Voiro. Freshman Haley Wentzel also scored twice, as did junior Kendall Garden and Lauren Beausoleil. Sophomore Taylor Tvedt impressed in goal, making nine saves.
Four different Lehigh players earned All-League honors on Monday, led by senior Lauren Willcox who was named All-League for a third straight season, including a spot on the first team for a second consecutive year. Garden also garnered first team All-League status, one season after earning second team laurels. Sophomore Allison LaBeau was named second team All-League, as was senior Kelly Scott. It marked LaBeau's second All-League honor in as many seasons while Scott earned the award for the first time in her storied career.
With a win at Boston University, Lehigh would play top-seeded Loyola in the semifinals Friday (if #3 seed Navy beats #6 Holy Cross). If the Crusaders upset the Mids, the Mountain Hawks would face second-seeded Colgate. The Patriot League Semifinals and Championship Game will be hosted by Loyola. The Mountain Hawks are looking for their first playoff victory since 2010 when they defeated Holy Cross at home in a 9-8 thriller.
Boston University has enjoyed an up-and-down season, entering the postseason with a 7-8 record and 4-4 mark in the Patriot League. After beating Lafayette and Lehigh on Mar. 28 and Apr. 4, the Terriers responded by dropping two straight, against Colgate, Loyola and New Hampshire, before winning at Bucknell on Saturday. Mallory Collins leads the team in scoring with 36 points behind 35 goals and one assist. Ally Adams is second with 31 points (23 goals, eight assists) while Remy Nolan has 20 (14 goals, six assists). Jill Horka owns 13 goals and three assists in the midfield along with a team-high 56 draw controls (which is third in the Patriot League). Goalkeeper Caroline Meegan owns a team-leading 37 groundballs while she's tallied a 9.52 GAA and .471 save percentage between the pipes.
The Terriers spoiled Lehigh's Senior Day two weeks ago when they defeated the Mountain Hawks 8-5 in Bethlehem. The schools have played four times in their history, three coming in the last two seasons. The sides first met in 1999, a 17-9 Boston University win. Lehigh handed the Terriers their first-ever Patriot League defeat last Apr. 5, 12-11 in double overtime. Boston University has come back to win two straight, including a 14-9 victory in last season's Patriot League Quarterfinal matchup.
With a win, Lehigh would travel to Loyola for the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday. The Mountain Hawks would face either the top-seeded Greyhounds or the second-seeded Colgate Raiders.
