LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-0 halftime lead and went on to earn a dominant 17-4 win over Bucknell on Tuesday. Senior Carli Sukonik paced the offense with a season-high six goals and an assist while the defense caused 12 of Bucknell's 17 turnovers, allowing five goals or fewer for the second time in four Patriot League contests as Lehigh improves to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.
"I think we dominated the first half in every facet of the game. Our determination and focus added up to lots of goals and great defense too," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern.
Five of Sukonik's six goals came in the first half as she scored the game's first two goals. The Mountain Hawks never looked back. Junior Kendall Garden added three goals, one assist, two groundballs, two draw controls and a caused turnover while junior Megan Paytas and freshman Kierstyn Voiro each scored twice as well.
"As a senior, Carli knows how to capitalize on a defense," said Redfern. "She's a great problem solver on our attacking end and she figured out how to get herself free and how to capitalize. She took advantage of her opportunities."
Sophomore Lauren Beausoleil finished with two assists and a game-high four draw controls. Senior defenders Lauren Willcox and Michelle Abramczyk were two of four Mountain Hawks to record two caused turnovers.
After Sukonik gave the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage, Voiro, Garden and Sukonik combined for the next five goals to make it 7-0 with 10:05 still remaining in the first half. Paytas, freshman Haley Wentzel, Voiro and Sukonik rounded out the first-half scoring, making it 11-0 after 30 minutes of play.
Sukonik's sixth goal of the game, just 1:35 into the second half, made it 12-0. Bucknell responded with the next three, but Lehigh answered with five of the game's final six goals as scores from sophomore Krista Dampman and senior Kelsey Yenco accounted for Lehigh's 16th and 17th goals, and the 17-4 final.
Lehigh finished with a 27-13 edge in shots and 16-10 advantage in groundballs. Draw controls were tied at 11 while the Mountain Hawks combined for four saves, two each from sophomore Taylor Tvedt and freshman Elizabeth Nussbaum. Bucknell's Elizabeth Duswalt made six stops.
The Mountain Hawks continue their busy stretch of road games when they travel to Mount St. Mary's on Thursday at 4 p.m. Lehigh then heads to Bryant on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Rutgers next Tuesday (7 p.m.).
"The game is a game of momentum and when you get momentum from game to game, it can't be underestimated," said Redfern. "With three nonleague games lined up pretty quickly for us, they're games we're really looking forward to."
