Mountain Hawks drop 13-7 final at Jacksonville
3/10/2015 6:14:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After falling down 4-0 early, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team responded by scoring seven of the next 12 goals to pull within 9-7 midway through the second half, but Jacksonville ended the game with four straight goals to down the Mountain Hawks 13-7 on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Carli Sukonik led the offense with three goals while classmate Kelly Scott spearheaded the defense with two groundballs and two caused turnovers, along with her second-career goal.
"Jacksonville is a really tough team. They're a talented team who will do very well in their conference," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I thought our team matched their toughness because they're pretty physical. We're happy with that and are proud of our effort. We got better today. The first 10 minutes was tough to climb out of. The first 10 minutes, and the draw control, were probably the differences in the game."
The Dolphins held a 14-8 edge in draw controls on the afternoon. Jacksonville led 9-3 in the first half, but the Mountain Hawks responded to win five out of 10 second-half draws.
Sophomore Allison LaBeau tallied three points on the afternoon behind one goal and two assists while Scott, senior Kelsey Yenco and junior Megan Paytas accounted for Lehigh's other goals.
"We want to score some more goals in transition and in our unsettled offense," said Redfern. "I thought we had some awesome plays today. We ran out plays to the end of our option, which takes discipline. The team executed under pressure, which is exciting. We need to do more of it, more consistently."
The Dolphins jumped out to an early 4-0 led just over four minutes into the game, but Sukonik got the Mountain Hawks on the board with 18:39 left in the opening stanza. The teams traded goals over the ensuing minutes until two straight Mountain Hawk tallies, both from Sukonik, pulled Lehigh within 6-4 with 4:54 left in the first half.
Trailing 9-5 early in the second half, the Mountain Hawks cut their deficit in half with goals from Scott and Paytas, to pull within 9-7 with 16:31 remaining. However, from there, the Dolphins ended the game on a 4-0 run for the 13-7 final.
The Dolphins finished with a 22-13 edge in shots and 22-21 advantage in groundballs. The Mountain Hawks had 18 turnovers to Jacksonville's 16. Lehigh's defense caused 10 of those turnovers, led by three from freshman Kayleen Kelly.
The Mountain Hawks will return home for their Patriot League opener as Lehigh hosts Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"This was a great test before Colgate, which I expect to be a total battle," said Redfern. "The team that plays the best Saturday will win. We're excited and ready to play our first league game."
