Lehigh drops 5-4 final in defensive game against Fairfield

2/28/2015 4:11:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a game that saw just nine goals and 28 shots, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team came out on the short end, falling to Fairfield 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Allison LaBeau accounted for three of Lehigh's four goals while junior Megan Paytas scored the other. The Mountain Hawks took a 4-1 lead late in the first half, but the Stags ended the game on a 4-0 run including all three goals of the second half.

"I'm disappointed in our second half today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I thought Fairfield played a really scrappy, aggressive game and we didn't match it in the second half. We had some crucial turnovers that prevented us from giving ourselves a chance to win today."

LaBeau got Lehigh off to a fast start, making it 1-0 with 22:28 left in the first half. Fairfield evened the score less than six minutes later, but LaBeau responded with the next two to make it 3-1 after a free position goal with 10:47 remaining in the first half.

Paytas made it 4-1, but that proved to be the final goal of the game as Lehigh didn't score over the game's final 39:19. After Fairfield pulled within 4-2, sophomore Lauren Beausoleil scored a goal which was called back due to an illegal stick. The Mountain Hawks hit two second-half posts and had several chances in the final five minutes, but couldn't beat Stags' goalie Chelsey Sidaras, who finished with five saves on the afternoon.

Final shots were 16-12 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 20-14 edge in groundballs. Fairfield finished with a 7-4 advantage in draw controls. Fairfield had 22 turnovers to Lehigh's 16. Six different Mountain Hawks tallied multiple caused turnovers, led by five from senior Lauren Willcox. Classmate Kelly Scott had a team-high four groundballs and two caused turnovers.

"Giving up five goals in Division I lacrosse is a great effort and we've got a really tough defense," said Redfern. "We had some great caused turnovers at crucial times that sent the ball back into our attacking end and we just couldn't capitalize."

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Friday when they head to Bucknell for their Patriot League opener. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
