BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a solid showing in its first meet of 2015 last weekend, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams will look to get back on track as the Mountain Hawks take to the road this weekend. Both Lehigh squads will visit Patriot League member Loyola Saturday in Baltimore, with the Mountain Hawk men concluding the weekend with a Sunday meet at NJIT.
Both the Lehigh men and women won six out of 13 events last Friday against Army. The women competed well despite conceding 26 points in diving events and came up just 13 points short in a 122-109 loss. Lehigh's men had some success as well but several third and fourth place finishes in events they didn't win hurt the Mountain Hawks in a 141-98 loss.
After seven meets this season, Lehigh's women own a 4-3 dual meet mark, while the men are 3-4.
Last week Lehigh was led by its sophomore sprinters as Kaitlyn Ruffing and Jamal Willis both broke their own Jacobs Pool records on the way to earning Patriot League Swimmer of the Week accolades. Both swimmers won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events with Ruffing setting a pool record in the 100 and Willis doing so in the 50. Both Mountain Hawks also added ECAC Swimmer of the Week honors on Wednesday for their performances.
Freshmen Julianne Koch and Sydney Bornsetin also won individual events for the women against the Black Knights, while Lehigh also won both the 400 medley relay and 800 free relay.
On the men's side, sophomore Jacob Moyar was a double-winner taking the 400 IM and the 200 fly, while classmate Justin White won the 200 free. Lehigh also captured first-place points in the 800 free relay with Army competing unscored after clinching the meet.
Loyola returns to dual competition in its first meet since the Greyhounds competed at the Copa Coqui Invitational in Puerto Rico on January 4. The Greyhound men finished third in the event, while the women finished fourth. In dual meet competition Loyola's women are 8-3 while the men are 7-4. In their last dual action, Loyola swept a quad meet from Iona, Marist and Saint Peter's.
Last year the Mountain Hawks swept the Greyhounds at Jacobs Pool with the men winning 209-53 and the women prevailing 192-70.
Saturday's meet begins at 1 p.m. from Mangione Pool in Baltimore.
On Sunday, Lehigh's men will face NJIT at the Fleisher Center beginning at 1 p.m. The Highlanders are 5-3 and most recently competed at the Founders' Invitational Relays in Islamorada, Fla. The Mountain Hawks defeated NJIT 222-53 last year at Jacobs Pool.
Next weekend, it will be the Lehigh women's turn to double-up. The Mountain Hawks will visit Patriot League rival Bucknell on January 24 with the women also visiting Princeton the following day.
