Second-half scoring leads Lehigh past Holy Cross, 3-1

9/27/2014 1:35:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a scoreless first half, the Lehigh field hockey team erupted for three second-half goals on its way to a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. Senior Steph Fratoni got the scoring started with her first goal of the season while sophomores Gabby Tofig and Marissa Glatt scored goals as well. The Mountain Hawks have now won three of their last four games.

"We wanted to be relentless and score a lot of goals. We were having opportunities in the first half, but we just needed to finish," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "In the second half, we had more opportunities and we finished. As a team, we worked really well keeping the ball up on our attacking side and we were able to finish and keep it going."

The Mountain Hawks held an 8-6 edge in shots through the first half as both goalies stood tall to stop the combined six shots sent their way. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Ward made all four of her saves in the first 35 minutes.

In the second half, Lehigh pressured from the get-go and turned the pressure into a goal at the 42:59 mark. Off a penalty corner, junior Taylor Mygatt sent the ball towards the left post and Fratoni finished with a tip past Crusaders goalie Maya Langman to make it 1-0.

Less than five minutes later, the Mountain Hawks made it 2-0 as junior Lindsey Schott unleashed a hard shot which was saved, but she corralled the rebound and fed Tofig who found the open cage at 47:33.

Lehigh continued to control play, finishing with an 11-2 edge in second-half shots. The Mountain Hawks added late insurance as Glatt took a centering pass from sophomore Amanda Granger and beat Langman with a high shot for a 3-0 lead at 67:13.

Holy Cross added a late goal to pull within 3-1, but it wasn't nearly enough.

"Patriot League wins are always what we're striving for," said Eversley. "It's a great win all around, but especially since it's a league game."

Final shots were 19-8 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks had five penalty corners to the Crusaders' one.

Ward finished with four saves across Langman, who made six.

"Most of our play was from the 50 and down, so we didn't have to play a lot of defense at times," said Eversley. "But when we did, our defenders definitely stepped up and they didn't give up many corners."

The Mountain Hawks return to action in 24 hours as they host Sacred Heart on Sunday at 1 p.m. It marks the second straight weekend Lehigh will play on back-to-back days.

"I think we're getting used to the quick turnaround, so we just need to come back out, with speed and be ready to go," said Eversley.
