Lehigh University Swimming and Diving Camps
BETHLEHEM, Pa. ā The Lehigh swimming and diving program will be hosting three summer camp programs beginning Saturday June 21. This summer marks the 19th straight year Lehigh will be hosting swimming and diving camps, which are renowned for their long history of great technique, training, and coaching.
Ā
The first camp is the Technique and Training Camp, a residential and commuter camp that runs from June 21-25. It will focus on technique sessions for each of the four competitive strokes oriented towards swimming efficiency. The Sprint camp is a residential only camp from June 25-28. This camp will provide swimmers with a 3.5 day Sprint Instruction program designed to improve technique and advance training skills of sprinters. The third camp is a Diving Camp, which runs June 28-29 and will allow divers to improve technique, training, and learn new dives.
Ā
All camps are run by the Lehigh swimming and diving coaching staff, headed by head coach Rob Herb, with current Lehigh swimmers serving as counselors.
Ā
An annual highlight of the Technique and Training Camp is former Olympic Gold Medalist and current Olympic swimming television commentator Rowdy Gaines. A friend of Lehigh swimming and diving and an instructor at the swim camp for the last 18 years, Gaines competed in the 1984 Olympics in the 100 meter freestyle, the 400 meter freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay, and won gold medals in all three events. Today, Gaines leads a busy schedule and travels around the world to share his passion for swimming with children, coaches and parents.
Ā
Two highly-regarded area coaches will also assist at the Technique and Training Camp in Doug Cornish and Mike Recine.
Ā
Cornish will be focusing on breaststroke techniques. He is the head coach of Blue Eagle Swim Team in Nazareth, Pa., and has mentored swimmers who have competed at Junior Nationals, Senior Nationals and the Olympic Trials. Swimmers that Cornish has coached have gone to the USA Swimming National Select Camp, been ranked No. 1 in the nation, and won Junior Olympics and PIAA State titles.
Ā
Recine is the former coach of the Atlantis Aquatics Club and will focus on backstroke. During his time with Atlantis he coached hundreds of swimmers who went on to compete at Junior and Senior Nationals. Racine also coached five swimmers who competed at the 2008 Olympic Trials. He has been associated with Lehigh's swimming camps for the past 17 years.
Ā
Lehigh's swimming and diving camps take place in Lehigh's Jacobs Pool and Morrissey Pool, both of which are located in Taylor Gymnasium.
