BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team travels to Bucknell Saturday and Sunday for an important four-game Patriot League series. Doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday with action set to begin at 12 p.m. A live audio broadcast will be available through bucknellbison.com.
Both teams opened league play last weekend as the Mountain Hawks swept a Monday doubleheader at Army to start the league season 2-1. Bucknell completed a four-game sweep of Navy to put the Bison atop the league standings. The Bucknell-Navy series was the only four-game set to be completed last weekend as the rainy weather took its toll on the league's other two matchups.
The Mountain Hawks carry an 11-11 overall record into Bucknell. Lehigh used strong pitching and clutch hitting to capture the pair of wins at Army on Monday before falling to La Salle in a 6-5 heartbreaker Tuesday in Lehigh's most recent action. Tied at four heading into the ninth inning, the Mountain Hawks scored on a wild pitch to earn a 5-4 win in Monday's first win at Army. Senior starting pitcher Colin Gotzon led Lehigh to a 3-0 shutout win in the second game as the Mountain Hawks improved to 2-1 in league play.
Lehigh is hitting a league-leading .289 as a team, led by junior Tim McKay (.348) and senior Joe Abeln (.346). Sophomore Mike Garzillo has batted in a team-best 17 runs and has reached base in ten straight games. In addition to batting average, the Mountain Hawks also lead the league in slugging percentage (.358) and on-base percentage (.374).
Lehigh's three starting pitchers at Army have been strong thus far this season, all accumulating ERAs under 4.00. Gotzon (3.22) and junior Nick Stephens (3.93) have each recorded two wins for Lehigh, while senior Mike Burke (3.18) sits at 1-1. Sophomore Kevin Long has been strong out of the bullpen and leads the team in wins with a 3-1 record and has also notched two saves. Senior Nick Cassell has a team-best three saves, while classmate Joey McNamara has been impressive as of late with a 3.38 ERA.
Bucknell's pitching led the way in its four-game sweep of Navy as the Bison outscored the Mids 12-4 over the weekend. A complete-game two-hit shutout was pitched by Andrew Andreychik in a 1-0 win Sunday. The sophomore has a streak of 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings in his last three starts. Andreychik and Brett Smith, who went 8-for-12 at the plate in the four wins, earned Patriot League Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.
Bucknell is only hitting .237 as a team, but four Bison average above .300. Anthony Gingerelli (.367) and Corey Furman (.321) lead the way. Furman's 14 RBI are a team-best and Smith has scored a team-high 19 runs. Bryson Hough (5.85 ERA, 3-3), Dan Weigel (4.10 ERA, 1-4), Andreychik (2.45 ERA, 3-2) and Xavier Hammond (5.18 ERA, 1-2) are Bucknell's projected starting pitchers this weekend. Tucker Rekucki's five saves lead the Patriot League.
Bucknell claimed last year's series 3-1 on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field.
Following this weekend's showdown, the Mountain Hawks will head to Temple Wednesday for the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic before returning home to host Holy Cross next weekend.
