Lehigh lands Fernandez-Soto, Lechner on NFF Hampshire Honor Society

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh football seniors Sergio Fernandez-Soto and Kyle Lechner have been named to the 2014 National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society, it was announced Tuesday.
Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: being a starter or significant substitute in one's last year of eligibility at an accredited NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university, achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout the entire course of undergraduate study, and meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
Fernandez-Soto saw action appeared in 31 games in his Lehigh career, catching 76 passes for 857 yards and three touchdowns as the Mountain Hawks' primary slot receiver. He caught 30 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns as a senior and enjoyed a career-best 33 receptions in his junior campaign.
Academically, the Miami native carries a 3.27 cumulative grade point average in political science. He has twice been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Lechner spent the last three seasons as Lehigh's snapper on punts, extra points and field goals. He appeared in all 11 games of his senior season and finished his career with five special teams tackles.
A New Jersey native, Lechner boasts a 3.45 GPA as a finance major. He has made multiple appearances on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and made Lehigh's Dean's List this past fall.
Both Fernandez-Soto and Lechner were members of Lehigh's Patriot League champion squads in 2010 and 2011.
A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society's eighth year, marking the highest school participation since the program began in 2007. The initiative has honored 4,927 student-athletes since its inception.
This marks the second consecutive year that Lehigh had two football student-athletes named to the Hampshire Honor Society. Running back Zach Barket and wide receiver Ryan Spadola from the class of 2013 were recognized last year. Other recent Lehigh members of the Hampshire Honor Society include Tom Randazza '11, Frank Giacalone '10 and Brendan Van Ackeren '09.
