BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team looks to extend its six-game winning streak when the Mountain Hawks welcome UMES to the Goodman Campus Baseball Field for a Wednesday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The midweek matchup was originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, but forecasted rain forced the contests to be moved back a day.
The Mountain Hawks (17-14, 7-4 Patriot League) are fresh off a four-game Patriot League sweep of Holy Cross last weekend, Lehigh's first league series sweep since 2010. Pitching was strong throughout the entire series and the Mountain Hawk bats broke out in Sunday's games as Lehigh outscored the Crusaders 25-8 over the four-game set. On Saturday, senior Colin Gotzon threw a three-hitter to lead Lehigh to a 1-0 win in the opener, while in the nightcap, seniors Mike Burke and Nick Cassell combined on a four-hitter in a 3-0 Mountain Hawk victory. It marked the first time in program history that Lehigh shut out a Patriot League opponent twice in one day and the first time the Mountain Hawks blanked any team twice in a single day since 1976. The offense heated up on Sunday as Lehigh picked up 6-5 and 15-3 wins over the Crusaders and eight separate Mountain Hawks recorded RBI throughout the day.
Lehigh is hitting a league-leading .279 as a team, led by junior Justin Pacchioli's .362 batting average. Sophomore Mike Garzillo (.316) and junior John Elson (.305) join Pacchioli as the only Mountain Hawks hitting above .300, but four other Lehigh players have an average over .280. Senior Joe Abeln has scored a team-best 23 runs, while Garzillo holds a team-leading 23 RBI. Lehigh stole 10 bases in its 14 attempts over the weekend and Elson leads the team with eight stolen bases on the season. The Mountain Hawks hold a 4.60 ERA and expect plenty of pitchers to see action in Wednesday's contests.
UMES (8-19, 4-8 MEAC) is coming off a 2-1 MEAC series loss to Norfolk State over the weekend, but prior to that, the Hawks took two from Navy to complete the first sweep of the Midshipmen in program history. Senior outfielder Stephen Bull went 15-for-22 over the Hawks' five games last week, including a stretch of 10-for-10 at the plate. The impressive statistics helped Bull become the first player in UMES baseball history to be awarded two National Player of the Week honors, as the senior garnered Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and NCAA.com Player of the Week honors.
Bull leads the team with a .336 batting average, followed by Byron Campbell's .333 average. The Hawks are hitting .270 as a team, compared to their opponents' .309. Bull has scored a team-best 23 runs, while Greg Turlik has batted in a team-leading 22 RBI. UMES holds a team ERA of 6.39, and like the Mountain Hawks, expect plenty of pitchers to see action in Wednesday's doubleheader.
Following Wednesday's matchup, the Mountain Hawks will hit the road for an important Patriot League series at Navy this weekend. Doubleheaders will be played Saturday and Sunday with first pitch set for 12 p.m. on both days.
