Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh junior goalie Matt Poillon and senior defenseman Ty Souders have been named to the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, which is presented to the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2014 Tewaaraton Award.
Â
Poillon and Souders are both two-time All-Americans and leaders of one of the nation's top defenses. They're two of 52 players in the nation (across Division I, II and III) named to the watch list, six coming from the Patriot League. Other league players recognized are Joe Fletcher and Justin Ward of Loyola, David Dickson of Bucknell and John Glesener of Army.
Â
Last season, David DiMaria, Dante Fantoni and Matt Poillon were all named to the watch list before DiMaria was one of the 25 players named a nominee in April.
Â
Poillon has continued his strong play, owning a 6.03 GAA and 59.7 save percentage this season. He's helped lead Lehigh to a 4-0 record, the Mountain Hawks' best start since 1997, to improve Poillon's career record to 29-6. Poillon is a two-time Patriot League Goalie of the Year, posting save percentages just under 60 percent every season of his decorated career.
Â
A local product, Souders is a two-time All-American, two-time All-Patriot League honoree and one of the top defensemen in the nation. He has impressed in the classroom as well and was recently named a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Souders has 13 groundballs and four caused turnovers this season, upping his career totals to 108 and 46, respectively. His impact has gone far beyond statistics as Souders is a leader of a defense that in 2012, finished second nationally (just 6.61 goals per game) before finishing sixth last year (7.94).
Â
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the #14 Mountain Hawks welcome #7/8 Loyola for a 12 p.m. faceoff. Tickets are only five dollars and available online by clicking here or at the box office on Saturday.
