Seven Mountain Hawks named to All-Patriot League teams

BETHLEHEM, Pa. ā Seven members of the Lehigh swimming and diving team were named to the All-Patriot League teams announced Wednesday. The Lehigh women were represented with sophomore Courtney Patterson and freshmen Kaitlyn Ruffing and Cora Summerfield on the first team plus sophomore Carolyn Koch on the second team. Freshman Jacob Moyar was named first team All-League for the Mountain Hawk men while senior Chris Hoke and freshman Jamal Willis were named to the second team.

Both Lehigh teams finished in fifth at the Patriot League Championships last weekend at Navy, with the Mountain Hawks winning a pair of individual league titles, while setting 20 new school records.

The All-Patriot League teams are based on individual first and second place finishes at the championship meet as well as points scored throughout the championship. Individual champions automatically earn first team All-League honors, while runners-up are second team members who can move up to the first team based on points scored.

The Lehigh women scored 365 points in championship meet and set 13 new school records. Patterson became the first Lehigh woman in 11 years to win an individual title as she captured the 400 yard individual medley on Friday with a time of 4:16.73. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native competed in five events and set school records in all five. Patterson finished eighth in the 500 free and fifth in the 1650 free and was also part of record-setting 800 and 400 yard free relay teams. She led Lehigh and ranked ninth among Patriot League women with 45 points. Patterson is now a two-time All-League performer after earning second team honors as a freshman.

One day after Patterson's title, Ruffing won the 100 yard freestyle in a school record time of 50.51, breaking Koch's record of 50.99 set last year. She earned 37 points for the Mountain Hawks coming in 15th among women. Ruffing competed in three individual events and four relays, finishing second in the 50 free and anchoring school record swims in the 200 and 400 yard free relays and the 400 medley relay.

Summerfield was the third Lehigh woman to earn first team All-League honors as she matched Ruffing with 37 points. She placed in the top eight in three events, highlighted by a sixth place showing in the 200 fly where she broke a 14 year old school record in the preliminaries. Summerfield also finished sixth in the 500 free and eighth in the 1650 and was a member of the record-setting 800 free relay team that finished fourth.

Koch earned her second All-League nod after making the first team as a freshman. She finished fourth in both the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events, setting a personal best of 50.97 seconds in the 100. Koch also finished 12th in the 50 free and swam on school record-setting relay teams in the 800, 200 and 400 yard free relays. She scored 34 points, which put her 21st among women.

On the men's side, the Mountain Hawks scored 291.5 points at the Patriot League Championships. Moyar led the way breaking three school records in three individual events and racking up 41 points to tie for 14th among men. His individual championship began with a seventh place finish in the 500 free as he broke a 19 year old record with a time of 4:28.89. Moyar also finished fourth in the 400 IM (3:56.63) and fifth in the 200 fly (1:48.74), setting school marks in both and was a member of the record-setting 800 free relay team as well as the 400 free relay team.

Willis claimed a spot on the All-League team with a second place finish in the 50 free. He tied the school record with a time of 20.19 in the preliminaries Willis also tied for 15th in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.85 and contributed to four relays, including the record-setting 200 medley relay team that finished fifth.

A first team All-Patriot League selection in 2013, Hoke capped his strong Lehigh career by earning second team honors. Hoke scored 32 points to rank second among Mountain Hawks and 31st among Patriot League men. His top finish came in the 50 free where he finished fifth with a time of 20.42 seconds. Hoke also finished seventh in the 100 free and 11th in the 100 fly and was a member of the same four relay teams as Willis, swimming the fly leg in the two medley relays.

A total of 76 men's and women's swimmers and divers appeared on the All-League teams. The Patriot League Championship winning Navy men and women led the way with 26 total student-athletes selected respectively. Ā
