
Mountain Hawks head across town to face rival Lafayette Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The stakes are high for archrivals Lehigh and Lafayette when the Lehigh women's basketball team head to the Leopards' home hardwood on Saturday at 2 p.m. The teams will be vying to improve upon their 2-5 league records, with the winner taking a slight edge in the Patriot League standings. Fans can watch the contest for free on the Patriot League Network or listen live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM in the Lehigh Valley.

"We always get excited to play Lafayette and this is a very big game for us," said head coach Sue Troyan. "The kids are always pumped up to face the Leopards and it's such a storied rivalry. Lafayette is a good team and we'll have to bring our best, but our kids are definitely up for the challenge."

After claiming a big win over Holy Cross, the Mountain Hawks fell to first-place and three-time defending league champion Navy on Wednesday night inside Stabler Arena by a score of 73-61. The Mids shot 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from three-point range, compared to Lehigh's 5.6 percent (1-for-18), to cruise to their eight straight win.

Junior Katie O'Reilly led the Mountain Hawk attack with a career-best 19 points, while classmate Sarah Williams was the only other Lehigh player in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore Kerry Kinek's 19 game double-digit scoring streak came to an end with her seven-point effort, but the Whitehall, Pa. native grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

Lehigh finished the game shooting 35.7 percent (25-for-70) from the field, compared to Navy's 47.5 percent (29-for-61). The Mids held a 45-40 rebound advantage, but Lehigh forced 18 Navy turnovers compared to its own 15.

Kinek leads Lehigh with her average of 16.7 points per game, while O'Reilly follows with 11.1. The Mountain Hawks average a league-leading 73.4 points per game.

The Leopards and Mountain Hawks have experienced similar league struggles, as both teams enter Saturday's contest with 2-3 league records. Lafayette's 8-10 overall record includes one more loss than Lehigh's 9-9 mark.

Lafayette began league play with an 0-3 mark before capturing back-to-back wins against newcomers Boston University and Loyola. The Leopards have since dropped contests to American and Holy Cross.

A late comeback attempt wasn't enough for Lafayette in its most recent game against Holy Cross, as the Crusaders were able to snap their win streak and capture the 75-68 victory. Senior Emily Homan finished the contest with a career-best 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the loss.

Lafayette finished the game shooting better than Holy Cross with a 45.6 percent (31-for-68) clip from the field, compared to the Crusaders' 45.2 (28-for-62). The Leopards netted just two of their ten three-point attempts, while Holy Cross sunk 11 of its 22 attempts from downtown. Lafayette shot just 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from the charity stripe.

Homan leads the Leopards this season with an average of 13.4 points per game, while Danielle Fiacco averages 6.8 boards per contest and has stuffed a league-leading 60 blocks.

The Mountain Hawks opened up a double-digit lead early in the contest and wouldn't look back as Lehigh cruised to the 20-point win on Senior Night and claimed its fourth straight victory.
