Lafayette hands Lehigh 73–51 road loss

1/25/2014 4:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball offense was limited to its lowest scoring effort of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 73-51 loss at rival Lafayette inside Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards improved to 3-5 in league play while the Mountain Hawks dropped their sixth straight road game and fell to 2-6 in league action.

"I'm disappointed in the loss and we didn't execute well, but this is a game that we can learn a lot from," said head coach Sue Troyan. "We'll watch the film and try to move forward with new lessons learned."

Senior Alexandra Yantzi recorded a career-high seven blocks in the contest, while also tossing in six points. Junior Katie O'Reilly finished with 11 points, while sophomore Kerry Kinek chipped in ten. Kinek led Lehigh with seven rebounds and two steals.

Lafayette's Emily Homan scored a game-high 23 points, following by Madeline Fahan with 15 and a game-best nine rebounds.

Lehigh finished the game shooting just 27.3 percent (18-for-66) from the field, compared to Lafayette's 35.3 percentage (24-for-68). Neither team shot the three well, with Lehigh's 21.7 percentage (5-for-23) slightly lower than Lafayette's 23.1 percentage (3-for-13). The Leopards shot 22-for-24 from the free throw line, including a perfect 14-for-14 in the first half.

The Leopards got out to an early 6-0 lead to force a Lehigh timeout just over two minutes into the game. A Kinek jumper got Lehigh on the board at the 16 minute mark, but the Leopards controlled an 8-2 lead at the first media timeout.

After a jumper from junior Sarah Williams, Yantzi stepped up to record back-to-back blocks to shut down the Leopard offense before hitting a big three-pointer to cut the Lafayette lead. Sophomore Elizabeth Jordan followed with another basket from beyond the arc to tie the game at ten with less than 12 minutes on the clock.

Tied at 12, Lafayette went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-12 lead with 7:54 left in the opening term before O'Reilly drew a foul and connected on her two chances from the charity stripe.  A large 7-2 Leopard run extended the Lafayette lead to 13 at 29-16 with less than four minutes in the first half.

Lafayette closed out the half on a 10-2 run with the help of six points from the charity stripe, as the Leopards went into the locker room with a 39-18 lead and handed Lehigh its lowest scoring half of the season.

A three-pointer from O'Reilly got the second-half scoring started, but Lafayette went on a 9-2 run, all nine Leopard points coming from Homan, before a Kinek layup was able to stop the streak and put the score at 48-25 in favor of the Leopards.

With the score at 57-28 with 11 minutes to play, Kinek was able to toss in four straight points for the Mountain Hawks, but Lafayette once again was able to quickly stop the Lehigh momentum with a run of its own.

The Mountain Hawks were able to get more points on the board to close out the contest, including the first career tallies for freshman Kari Moffat, but couldn't overcome the dominant Lafayette lead as the Mountain Hawks were handed the 73-51 loss.

The Mountain Hawks will now begin preparations for a trip to Lewisburg to face instate foe Bucknell on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game can be viewed on the Patriot League Network and fans can listen live on 91.3 WLVR in the Lehigh Valley or wlvr.org.
