Lehigh hosts three-time defending champ Navy Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Mountain Hawks aim to keep their momentum going when they welcome three-time defending Patriot League champion and undefeated Navy into Stabler Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Midshipmen own a perfect 6-0 record in league play and are 14-3 overall, while the Mountain Hawks picked up a much-needed win in their last contest on Saturday. The contest can be viewed on Service Electric 2 Sports in the Lehigh Valley or on the Patriot League Network.
After recording its lowest scoring half of the season at American (19 points), Lehigh bounced back in the opening term against Holy Cross to put up the Mountain Hawks' highest scoring first half (49 points) en route to an 87-82 win over the Crusaders. Seven Mountain Hawks scored seven or more points as a balanced attack was able to hold off a Crusader comeback attempt.
Junior Sarah Williams led the Mountain Hawks with a career-high 16 points and also dished four assists. Sophomore Elizabeth Jordan netted a career-high 12 points on 4-of-5 from three-point range, while junior Katie O'Reilly also chipped in 12. Senior Lindsay Hoskins finished with 11 points and a team-leading four steals. Sophomore Kerry Kinek recorded her second double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.
Lehigh finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (32-for-74) from the field, highlighted by a 46.3 percent (19-for-41) clip in the first half. The Mountain Hawks shot 42.9 percent (6-for14) from three-point range in the opening half. The Lehigh bench scored 39 points, compared to Holy Cross' 11.
Navy carries a perfect 6-0 Patriot League record into today's contest and a 14-3 overall mark. Five of Navy's league wins have been double-digit wins, with the only exception being the Mids' double overtime 94-92 victory over Bucknell. Navy has won its last seven games.
The three-time defending Patriot League champions captured a dominant 71-40 win over Colgate on Saturday evening in their most recent contest. Navy used an early 18-4 lead and late 24-2 run to close out the Raiders in Annapolis.
Navy shot 46.4 percent from the field in the game (43.3% in first half, 50.0% in the second) and held Colgate to an overall mark of 23.7 percent (20.0% and 29.2%, respectively). The Mids also drained 11 three-point field goals on the night and shot 42.3 percent (11-26) from beyond the arc, while holding the Raiders to a pair of treys in 16 attempts (12.5%).
Kara Pollinger averages 14.4 points per game to lead the Mids, followed by Jade Geif with 12.5 points and a team-best 9.4 rebounds per contest. Each of Navy's other three starters average 9.6 points per game or above.
Navy owns the second highest scoring offense in the league, averaging 70.2 points per contest, only behind Lehigh's league-leading 74.1 average. The Mids' field goal percentage (43.1), three-point field goal percentage (38.3) and rebounding (41.8) all sit atop the league charts.
The Mountain Hawks will look to snap a three-game skid to the Mids on Wednesday evening. The Mids swept last season's series and defeated the Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals during the 2011-2012 season and went on to eventually win the league championship.
Lehigh put up a season-low 34 points in the last meeting with Navy, in a 49-34 loss in Annapolis on Feb. 27, 2013. Lehigh shot just 27 percent (13-for-48) from the field and committed 22 turnovers that led to 21 Navy points as the Mountain Hawks' four-game winning streak came to an end.
