BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh swimming and diving team continues its season preparation with the annual Brown and White meet set for Friday, head coach Rob Herb announced Lehigh's 2013-14 schedule. The regular season begins Friday October 25 when the Mountain Hawks visit West Chester.
Less than 24 hours later Lehigh heads to Lawrenceville, N.J., for a 1 p.m. meet against Rider.
The season is highlighted by home Patriot League matchups against Colgate, Lafayette, Loyola and Bucknell.
On the men's side, the Mountain Hawks finished last season with 3-4 overall with a 2-2 league record. They had a strong showing at the Patriot League Championships, finishing fourth overall. The women finished 1-5 overall with the lone win coming on the road against Lafayette. They, too, finished the season strong coming in fifth at the championship meet.
"Big things are expected by both the men and women's team," said head coach Rob Herb. "I think it is possible to have two winning records and several of the top athletes in the league coming from these teams."
Following the opening weekend on the road, the Mountain Hawks return home on November 2 to take on Colgate. The men's team also welcomes NJIT with the Raiders for a tri-meet. The men have competed well against Colgate the past few years, beating them handily by a score of 88-23 last season.
After a weekend off, Lehigh heads to Princeton, N.J., to swim in the two-day Princeton Invitational. The meet has proved to be a valuable mid-season gauge for the athletes.
"We are super excited to go back to the Princeton Invite to race in such a great facility," said Herb. "Also during first semester, we have the Lehigh-Lafayette meet, as always a highlight of our season."
The Mountain Hawks return home the following Friday (November 22) for what might be the most anticipated meet of the season. Lehigh welcomes rival Lafayette for a 3 p.m. showdown at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawk men and women have swept the meet the past five seasons. The men are riding a 22 meet win streak against the Leopards, not having lost since 1989.
Lehigh will return home for the Thanksgiving holiday before a few qualifying swimmers begin gearing up for U.S. Nationals beginning December 5 in Knoxville, Tenn. The Mountain Hawks had a strong showing at the meet last year, sending four swimmers including current senior Chris Hoke and junior Alissa Leung.
The ability to send swimmers to U.S. Nationals, along with the team's winter training trip, scheduled for early January, have been made possible by strong funding from alumni.
"We have had amazing support from our alums this year! The Swimming and Diving Partnership lead by Alum Chris Marshall '88, Dan Rodenhaver '97, Mark Ostapenko '10 and Nancy Merritt '04 rallied the swimming and diving alumni based to help with a record breaking fundraising year," said Herb "Led by Tom Campbell '80, Jim Fitzgerald '79 and Dave Painter '60, the support for the team was remarkable."
With no December dual meets, the team will continue to train before heading home for the Christmas holiday.
Lehigh opens up the New Year with a three straight Patriot League meets. The Mountain Hawks take on Army on January 10 before welcoming Loyola on the 18th and Bucknell the 25th.
The regular season comes to a close in February with two meets scheduled before the Patriot League Championships. Lehigh will send a few swimmers to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Invitational, while the rest of the team remains on campus to take on Drexel in the final dual meet of the season.
The Patriot League Championships are scheduled for February 19-22 on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
