EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team captured its ninth straight victory over rival Lafayette on Saturday morning in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. The Mountain Hawks captured a 25-34 victory in the 6k race led by junior Ingrid Simon who raced her way to a first place finish with a personal best time of 22:42.60. Seven Mountain Hawks placed in the top ten of the event.
"Our girls did a really great job breaking up Lafayette's two front runners, which was our plan going into the race," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We really had to rely on our pack to secure the win and they did a nice job of working together."
Simon's blistering pace placed her 15 seconds ahead of second place finisher Rose Wiley of Lafayette. Simon destroyed her previous personal best time of 22:53 by 11 seconds at Saturday's dual race to give the runner her first collegiate win.
"What we saw from Ingrid today is what we normally see from her in practice," said Utesch. "She's been very competitive and consistent for us. It was great to see that translate into a race scenario and to see her get a chance to establish herself as an All-Patriot League level performer in cross country."
Lehigh senior Rosie Roessel continued to impress as she finished in fourth place with a time of 23:12.10. Senior co-captain Katherine Howley finished in fifth place at 23:18.80. Mountain Hawks sophomore Elizabeth Weiler (23:52.40), freshman Anne Birkenmaier (23:59.80), junior Shannon Nelson (24:00.80) and senior Peggy Lai (24:05.30) placed seventh through tenth, respectively.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action when they host the 40th annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports. The competition will feature a full day of collegiate and high school races beginning at 10 a.m. on October 5.
