BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's cross country competed in their second meet of the season on Saturday morning, beating Lafayette in their annual dual meet by a score of 22 to 33. This was their 20th straight victory in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Jefferson Health.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Highduch was the first Mountain Hawk to finish. Her time of 21:32.4 was enough to give her her first collegiate cross country victory and a new personal best.Â
"I'm very proud of how I did today," exclaimed Highduch. "At Paul Short last year I didn't feel that good and I tried really hard to focus on positivity and affirming myself as I was doing this race. Going through the course and finding spots to focus on getting to, and then focus on getting to the next spot, that was a big thing for me."
Senior Lucy Afanasewicz was the next to finish, securing the second place finish with a time of 21:55.9. Grace Hughes and Grace Trimmer were the third and fourth finishers for Lehigh. In their first races of the season, the junior Hughes finished fifth overall with a time of 22:21.7 and first-year Trimmer finished sixth at 22:27.6. Sophomore Kaya Meler secured another spot in Lehigh's top five finishers, placing eighth overall (22:42.6). Sadie Millett (23:03.6) and Devon Sutton (23:06.4) rounded out Lehigh's scoring seven, placing 11th and 12th respectively.Â
The Mountain Hawks are back on the course next Saturday at 11:45am., as they travel to Central Connecticut State University on September 20th for the Ted Owen Invitational.
