BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Despite the October heat, the 40th annual Paul Short Run, hosted by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports, saw some impressive performances Saturday before the race was halted due to heat. The Lehigh's women's cross country team braved the conditions to place 26th overall, besting last year's 30th place even with a bigger pool of competitors. The Mountain Hawks averaged a time of 22:18 in the Women's Gold 6k.
"We were in some pretty tough heat conditions out there and I couldn't be more proud of the way the runners prepared for it," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We navigated the heat as well as we possibly could have."
Teamwork seemed to have a hand in the successes of junior Ingrid Simon and senior Rosie Roessel, who came in at 102nd and 103rd places, respectively. The two runners both clocked in at 21:53, which was a personal record of almost a full minute for Simon. It is the second personal record in a row for the junior, who picked up Patriot League Runner of the Week praise following her record-setting performance at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual on Sept. 21st.
The team had the goal of getting four runners under 23:00, which they achieved in addition to Simon and Roessel's successes. Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler wasn't far behind the duo with a time of 22:10 for 138th place, while sophomore Jennifer Markham clocked in at 22:33 and sophomore Carlie Skellington at an even 23:00.
Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino repeated as individual champion, crossing the line in 19:44. Georgetown claimed the team crown with 112 team points, followed by Dartmouth (125) and Villanova (168). Â
The Mountain Hawks were able to best several Patriot League competitors, including Bucknell, Navy, Army, Loyola, and Colgate. The team will use their success to focus on bigger meets such as the Patriot League championships.
"There are a lot of regionally ranked teams at this meet and I believe we took a couple of those down," said Utesch. "There's still a lot of work to do. And those teams who were affected by the heat are going to come back strong so we have to keep going and building on what we have. "
Up next for the Mountain Hawks is the Penn State National Invite on Oct. 18th, as well as the Lafayette Invitational at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19th.
