Mountain Hawks grab second place at Penn State National

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team placed second at the Penn State National on Friday morning. The Mountain Hawks finished four runners in the top 15, while sophomore Jennifer Markham led the way with a ninth place finish.
"We had a really tight front four who did a great job today," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "The girls really stuck together and we were able to accomplish many of the goals that we had set for this meet."
West Virginia, ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region, claimed the victory with 28 points followed by the Mountain Hawks, ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region, with 78 points. James Madison followed in third place with 82 team points, while host Penn State placed fourth with 106 points.
Six Mountain Hawks finished in under 23 minutes, while the final Lehigh runner barely missed the mark with a time of 23:01. Markham led the way with a time of 21:56, which served as a new personal best. Her previous personal best of 22:33 was set just two weeks ago at the 40th Annual Paul Short Run.
Junior Ingrid Simon and graduate student Rosie Roessel continued to shine coming in 11th and 13th place, respectively. The duo finished only six seconds apart, as Simon crossed the line in 22:09 and Roessel recorded a time of 22:15.
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler wasn't far behind in 15th place with a time of 22:20. Senior Katherine Howley placed 30th (22:51), sophomore Carlie Skellington finished 32nd (22:58) and senior Peggy Lai came in 33rd (23:01).
The Mountain Hawks return to action tomorrow as they head to the Lafayette Invitational. Saturday's meet will be the final competition before Patriot League Championships on Nov. 2.
